Just had a call from my mechanic about the gf's TL, looks like the noise that I thought was a idler pulley is actually the aircon compressor on it's way out. Makes a kinda rattly\grinding noise like a worn bearing, but only when the aircon is off. How much are new\2nd hand compressors? We have the warranty with the car that will cover upto $500 of the cost, but I recall on here a while back that they were fairly exxy.

I thought still being under warranty they would replace with no cost to you!

When my aircon compressor played up, loud clunk when you turn it on and it engages and clunk when aircon working away, mitsu replaced the compressor and all associated gear under warranty with no cost to me, they even supplied a courtisy car at no charge.

I just find it wierd that the warranty covers upto a certain amount, does it still a new car warranty?

It's not under mitsu warranty, it's a nov 03 model so would be just out of the 5 years, the extended warranty through AWN that came with the car from the dealer, they only cover upto $500 for aircon stuff.

I got the ac compressor in my old KS replaced. It was less than $500. I think it was about $300. Apparently the AC pully is always spinning, even with the AC off. Mine was only producing the groaning noise when the AC was off as well. I'm guessing when the AC is on, it puts etc load on the pully and reduces freeplay.

Also, is the TL bought new? Don't know if warranty on the AC compressor is transferrable to new owners.

Edit: ignore the second question.

Just got the car back and checked in the warranty book, we got the "deluxe" one on both the TJ and the TL so it's covered for $1000 actually, which mechanic says will cover cost of compressor, dryer etc and regas.
