Hi guys

Just wanted to get your opinion on what possible problems could occur from this scenario,

I have a dodgy CAI that pokes out beneath the front bar, I have gone through a large puddle about a month ago, submerged the front bar and it has sucked up a LOT of water, the car didn’t stall but when I remove the air filter the a heap of water poured out. Obviously some of the water would have made it past the filter, so I am wonder what kind of affect this will have on my engine and where that water ended up. I am hoping that it turned into condensation and blew out the exhaust, or possibly that it is sitting at the bottom of the sump. Just wondering what do you guys think? and any future problems that may come as a result.

The only difference I have noticed in the car is that I lose power when at 2200 rpm at half throttle in 3rd gear but that may just be the hot air that it's sucking in, well I hope that’s all it is.

Any insight would be great,

Thanks

Mathew

I think your loss of power is just a 3rd gen flat spot, amplfied probably by your ghetto CAI lol

cant really help you in terms of the water issue, but 3rd gens do have a flat spot.

A bit of water is fine as in a few drops or so.. To much will Hydrolic lock the engine.. That means water goes in intake and when piston comes up to compress air it cant compress the water and **** engne..:) Simple Terms....:)

if it didnt stop you should be all good

i know someone who did the exact same thing in a 3rd gen.. but this one stalled... waited 5mins and it started, made some weird noises and ran fine again...

If in doubt get a mechanic to check it over.

Congratulations! You invented the water scoop! Now you know why the original is where it is! Please restore your air intake to factory specs!

To put your mind at ease - the standard air filter tends to hold the water and not let it through. Your engine might splutter a bit when water hits the filter, but that is more likely because the filter is saturated with water and unable to allow air to pass through it.

very true

Like gremlin said if its still going its all good, if you sucked in enough water that your engine couldn't compress you'd know about it, like a broken rod...ect.

Maybe you need it sucking from near the head-light?

Its a K&N filter so it the filter is fine, its looks like it would let water pass through it, and yes I’m going to put the stock CAI back in, just in case i go through anymore puddles,

Thanks for the replies.

the oiled K&N isnt too bad under wet conditions. The oil helps a lot with keeping water out, and obviously if submerged its likely that water will be sucked through but water mist or even a quick splash is unlikely to cause dramas. Think of water spray/mist on a K&N much like a Evapourative cooler, in that the air entering the engine has been slighly chilled if there wasnt enough to stall the engine. You would know if you got signitcant water in there, as when it wet the MAF hot wire, the car wouldnt have gone anywhere fast with the faulty readings the ecu would get.

Seen a vn v8 put a fist sized hole in the side of the motor when a conrod smashed it's way out after doing the same thing as you did.

Seen a Sigma do the same without any provocation whatever! lol My blowup was better though - mangled piston actually came out of the engine and was sitting on the engine mount! I didn't lol at the time but.

If I was inside a VN V8 I'd want to get out too

Maybe you need it sucking from near the head?

Fixed lol

The VY my mate had for work had a low slung CAI and it snorkelled up a few litres in a 10cm deep puddle. Holden made him claim a new engine on insurance as they denied fault, but strangely when he got the car back, the intake had been raised up to grille level.
