View Full Version : My stupid mechanical mistake.

Last night I removed, inspected, and replaced the passenger side engine mount on my TS v6.

I made a bad mistake in that I tried to do it with the car still standing on its wheels. As a result when I jacked under the sump the car rose on it's springs. The more I jacked the more the rest of the car chased the engine up. I stupidly continued and got it to the point where I could force out the main mounting bolt, remove and inspect the mount (seems ok), and then replace the bolt. I estimate I jacked the engine up somewhere between 50 and 70mm by the sump!!!

I realised my mistake halfway through the operation. By this time I had the mounting bolt far enough through to take the weight of the engine so I lowered the lot to take the pressure off, jacked up the whole car onto stands, re jacked the motor about 20mm and easily slid the bolt fully into place and tightened everything up.

I had a close look at the sump afterwards and can see no damage or leaks. It appears to be the same shape it was before - no dents etc. I hope that I have gotten lucky and have escaped without damaging anything.

I want to inspect the transaxle mount next. It is on the other side to the sump. Can anyone tell me if it's ok to place the jack (protected with a block of wood of course) under the trans (it's a manual)directly below the mount and jack from there, or should I continue jacking under the sump? I am working my way up, building confidence, for removing and replacing the rear mount and roll stopper which I know have to be replaced.

There is no issue with supporting the engine while the car is on the ground, so long as you are only supporting the engine and not lifting the whole car as you did :D

You think it will be OK to jack under the transmission?

I wouldnt attempt it under the tranny i reckon you would break something.

its the same way i changed my engine mounts, but i had a block of wood between the jackhead and the sump though.

You only need to support the motor so dont need to jack very far, probably 3 pumps after contact would nearly do it
