Just a quick shout out to everyone interested in giving their Magna some noise. I went and ordered the AL4-5597 Lukey bolt on muffler from Super Cheap Auto the other day, and paid only $210. Cost was $199 with a small delivery fee. They said it would take a few days to come in but it only took 3 HOURS!
I have never installed anything on my car, but once you see the new muffler, taking the old one off is pretty self explanatory. although I would suggest raising the car with wheel ramps as I did rather than a jack.
Install took just over one hour (damn those rubber hangers) and it sounds great, and will apparently sound ever better over the next few months as the muffler burns in.
I drive a TJ but it fits many Magna's as they share the same exhaust, even fits both 3.5 and 3 litre models. Check the Lukey website to have a listen

Im sorry to say that all this is very very very common knowledge around these parts
I've got one of these on the rada, only set me back $165 from supercheap though :D

At least give him some credit for taking the time to share his experience with us. Yes it's common knowledge however some newer members (like myself) may not know about it and although i've seen some muffler stuff before i have some questions.
Just read a bit more into and apparently these are the same ones as the vrxs, ignore the q's :)

Good to hear you are happy with it. I have been thinking about one of these myself. Is there any drone??

The guy has only made 6 posts, how would he know its common knowledge.
Anyway, I am also curious to know if there is any drone & how loud is it compared to say a TJ VRX/Sports????

search the word al4-5597 you get about 500 hits, and its very similar to the sports box, little more noisey, you get a bit of drone from 2k-2.5k with this muffler on an auto

For the record, Bursons sell the AL4-5597 for $145. That might've just been trade price though I can't imagine it being too much more for retail.

a good note makes a car that much more enjoyable to drive hard! i have a junbl racing spiral cannon sitting in the shed. I'd love to hear the magna with it on, but i'd never intend on keeping it there, i've never liked cannons, but would be interesting just to hear it once, i dont think i could live with myself having an ultra expensive muffler on a stock system with an auto box though. to ebay it shall go i thinks.
Do you think you've gained anything other than noise with the mod? i know it wouldnt be huge if you did notice anything different, but i bet it sounds good enough regardless. what kind of tip is on it?

It's fairly quiet when cruising, just gives a growl when i put the foot down, but I'm planning on taking it up the freeway in the next few days too check it at higher speeds. It sounds a little strange on an auto when taking off at average acceleration, but I wouldn't classify it as drone because it's not annoying (not yet) and doesn't hold the same note for very long.
Didn't gain anything other than worse fuel economy, since i just want to hear it all the time. As for the tip, I've just left it as the pipe, it doesn't look that bad and i might get round to it one day.

I put pacemaker headers on my tippy rada with a lukey exhaust tip and left the rest of the factory exhaust for now.
Looks good and sounds a little beefier than stock and has better fuel economy because of the combination but you might want to look into extractors for the economy and better performance for your car.
I had the extractors HPC coated aswell, well worth it!

Yes you forgot to mention your awesome mate [TUFFTR] went to the trouble of ordering it in for you with his staff discount! Or else this poor bloke will think he's just been ripped off $50 cause it was from another store.
Direct bolt on, ALTHOUGH You will need 3 bolts (I think M10) to bolt it together, as this has no studs.
Standard muffler has studs to join it through the cat back flange, so if you get this and try and join it together its like....watching two lesbians.....nothing goes into the holes :)

Does anyone know if that Lukey muffler can be fitted to a TJ2 wagon. I think that because of different rear suspension pipe is routed in a different way. Has anyone DIY-ed wagon rear muffler?

Just buy the muffler and have a muffler shop weld it in place of your current muffler, easy job for them.

Wouldn't Lukey make that same muffler made-up in a "flange-back" package for sedan (as AL4-5597) and also for wagon (as a different part no:). I'm not sure who up here in Tamworth deals in Lukey - SupaCheap deny it, and my favoured workshop only deal with 'no-name' cheaper after-market exhausts.

I got one of these fitted to my Verada the other day (bought it off Disciple from here), and I'm finding it pretty damn annoying to be honest. Call me stupid but it sounds too loud for my liking from inside the car. I'd never had a louder than stock muffler fitted so maybe it will take some time getting used to it, but currently wishing I hadn't bothered!

Not a sleight against you at all, just me not knowing what it would sound like from the inside!!

Ace,
Does your Bum-O-Meter detect any more Killer-Wasps liberated from the freer-flowing (tho louder) exhaust?
I've just finished patching the intermediate exhaust pipe on my Rada, which has a rear muffler in reasonable nick for a while yet. I'll be keen to change rear muffler to the Lukey when mine eventually goes, and I reckon the Rada noise-proofing will tame it down. (I have a KJ and a TJ Sports - the difference in interior noise is VAST, not just exhaust but road noise too. Parents Executive - TJ as well - is also a noise-bucket. I'm planning having seats n consoles out to try a bit more soundproofing.
Just interested in your impression of driveability difference in having the bit-noisy exhaust??
Flying Ace
25-01-2009, 10:36 AM
To be honest I haven't noticed any difference, but then I don't drive it hard anyway. It's just the noise that is annoying, especially around 2500rpm, when the car's doing about 60-70km/h, the drone is quite irritating to the point where I'm getting off the throttle just to quieten it down.
And to be honest I don't think it suits the feel of the car - to have a classy looking car with a loud exhaust just feels a bit odd. I think I'll be taking it off pretty soon really, it isn't for me.
Thanks to Disciple for a smooth transaction, and I wouldn't have known what it would be like if I didn't try it myself!

Maybe try adding some resonators to make it more rumbly and less loud? The growl the lukeys make even at idle makes me smile! :D

Would adding a resonator(s) make it less droney, or should I just remove it altogether?
Had it on for a week or so now, and still not liking it :(

magna00 is spot on. Ive got one on the TJ Magna Wagon (had to get the flanges moved to fit the wagon - but only 60 bucks). Drones around 2K when accelerating..but fairly quiet at Hwy speeds.
The missus comments on it though and she lives in a smallish unit complex, so im waiting for her to start complaining. lol

I'm with Ace. I have yet to get any of my exhaust system upgraded, but I'm looking for something with a bit more punch in the pedal, but without being too loud, otherwise it'll seem a bit silly compared to the rest of my car.
I'm getting the impression that Lukey isn't the way to go for what I'm after?

This is it up next to the stock executive muffler, as you can see much smaller.

I dont see why you people are whining, I dont know of many mufflers that are both free flowing and still extremely quiet. I put this on to my exec and I dont find it very loud at all (id like it louder if anything). If you want to change the note put on a resonator and see how that goes, they are not very expensive.

Wow that is quite short isn't it, even the stock ralliart/vr-x/LR2779 muffler is the same dimensions as the exec muffler. Kinda cool, except I'd be changing that tip pronto lol

Yeah much smaller and much lighter, and yes the tip is fugly. For the time being i just got a $20 2.5" into 3" tip from super cheap, just slid over does the job.

I still havent put a tip on mine yet, looks a bit ghetto.
But i have a problem, bought dual dumpies and they were going to stick out about 10cm further because the bracket thing is in the way. i considered removing and re-welding the bracket back further but even then the pipe doesn't straighten out until where the bracket currently is.
Any suggestions? Prefer to DIY rather than take it to an exhaust shop.

I've had this muffler on for a couple of years now with twin 2.5" tips and it has slightly improved fuel economy (8/9L/100km range combined) and provided a smidgen more seat of the pants power/torque. Yes you can quite easily hear it within the cabin but I would not call it intrusive by any means, even when on the freeway. My tyres make more noise. The best aspect though is when it's idling and I have had people comment on how nice it sounds burbling away.
