Resetting the immobiliser and initialising new keys has been covered before - this is the same question, but for a Lancer ('97, CE, GLXi). Just bought one for daughter. It came with just one key, and sometimes it doesn't register when put in the ignition - I need to lock/unlock with the remote before the car will start. What is involved in getting a second key and getting them all to work? (I haven't got the key cutting code that would have come with the original keys but could get a blank cut to match the one key)

should be able to get one cut any where
but if your picky then go to mitsubishi and buy one
pretty sure these lancers didnt have a chip built into the keys but i may be wrong

One locksmith I went to couldn't cut another key because he had no blanks - the key is mirror image, according to him. The Mitsu dealer I bought the car from says there is no transponder in the key, the locksmith said there should be but couldn't detect it with his instrument (but then a key from an 04 Lancer didn't register either), and the manual says there is a transponder in the key. I'm confused!

Just checked - manual says "IF the car is fitted with an immobiliser" ie. this car may/may not have one. How to tell?

EDIT: Locksmith had to be convinced his transponder reader had a flat battery. Sent his daughter(?) next door for a new 9V battery - transponder keys (97 Lancer, 04 Lancer both come up with "texas" - Texas Instruments I assume).

Probably not - '97 CE Lancer GLXi is a girl's car, Evo is a man's car! lol

Question answered! New key $60 from local Mitsu dealer, has transponder in it, now needs to be cut by a locksmith and then back to dealer to get encoded.

Don't know about the '97, but mitsi will no doubt charge you to encode
They're gunna slug me $240 for '07 lancer  Mine HAS to come from mitsi themselves everything I've read :(

All sorted! $60 for the key (from Mitsu dealer), $35 for the cut (Mr Minit charges this much cos they will replace the key if they damage it - as if anything can go wrong with a keycut!) and $16.50 for the encoding, done by the Mitsu dealer service dept on short notice!

mmmm over $100 for a spare transponder key! Ain't modern technology wonderful! (wonderfully expensive that is)
