View Full Version : Exhaust noise

As some of you guys might know, I recently upgraded my exhaust to a 2.5" catback with lukey LR2779 muffler. The exhaust has a nice note when accelerating (although i am finding it a little ricey -Pitch is too high for me), but has an awful crackly noise at around 2000rpm. I revved it the other day at work just to show my mate my new exhaust as he was keen to hear it, and i was just thinking to myself 'God that sounds awful'! The crackling makes the car sound so weak and ricey.
Has anybody else with the LR2779 had this problem? I though it would disappear after i had gone through the 1000km break in, but sadly it hasnt. (although it has got slightly better)
I dont know if this is related, but i am also finding the exhaust is rattling quite a bit. I was in 5th the other day going up a slight incline (Revving around 2200) and the exhaust was rattling like crazy. I could feel the vibrations through the car! I also find that it bangs around a bit when i go over a speed bump or if I hit the clutch fast.
Is there anything i can do about this? Should I ring up the exhaust place and get them to take a look at it?
Anyway i was thinking of putting up a vid on youtube maybe tommorrow just so people can see what im talking about with the crackling. But does anybody know what could cause this?

i dont find the lr2779 to be ricey (or droney - to me anyhow) or tinny in sound.
but then again - the rest of my system is still stock mitsy offering so not a good comparo.
if its rattling around and clanging into stuff/vibrating, take it back to the exhaust place and get them to have another look at it - shouldnt be costing you anything either if it hasnt been installed correctly.
the tone does continue to change - i found mine to deepen a lil more over the next 2000km or so - when i first got it i thought to myself geez, i just spent all that money on a quiet exhaust?!
sounds will change, looseness wont - get that checked and it could be effecting the tone of the exhaust as well by resonating and rattling.

Have you taken the resonator off???? I have with mine and it sounds Ricey... The deep note is still there but the high pitch is stronger.... The wife hates it..
I kept it though, its going back on..

yeah 1000km is barely broken in, give it another 2-3000 and it should deepen right up.

As above. Put the resonator back on, or add another one. That will get rid of the "angry bees in a milo tin" sound.
I liked the sound of mine with the lr2779 on my awd, but since putting on extractors & metal cat I've got the Milo tin full of bees at higher rpm.
Might have a look at a better reso. then.

Where abouts are you. We should compare the sounds. The only differences between yours and mine are:
1. you've got a metal cat, I've got the stock,
2. you've got the Lukey and I've got the sports/vrx muffler, and
3. I've to the HM headers.

Well I dont think I got a reso put on? Because when i left the exhaust place the guy goes "If it too loud for you, I can put on a resonator for you for $60" He said he wouldnt make me pay for the install, just for the res. Which sounds good to me.
Will having a reso on make it more quiet? I am craving that deep sound that i get in 4th/5th and wouldnt like that to disappear too much....

A resonator won't make it any quieter, it'll just take the resonance (funnily enough) of the exhaust note away.

Oh god dont make me read that! HAhaa Reminds me of my good ol yr 12 physics class. :(
Anyway, I just got a vid recorded so i will post on youtube and give a link on here so you guys can hear/ see what im talking about.

Haha, sorry! Yeah, I know the sound you're talking about - I had it when I got the exhaust on my old Ralliart. I had the exhaust guy put in an extra 16" resonator (might of been 12", can't remember) and that took all the crackly noise away and just left me with a nice deep burble.

So do you think a resonator would solve this problem? Or will i just have to put up with it?

A resonator will fix that sound. That sound is, like I said before, resonance. Exhaust gases flowing through the exhaust and "bouncing" around due to the freer flowing nature of the exhuast. Because as we know, sound is simply vibrating air.

Ah sweeeeett! Thanks Disciple! I Shall ring up the exhaust place then and get a reso put on! :D
and while im at it, I might as well get a new tip put on aswell as i was planning to do this soon anyway!
I cant be bothered opening a new thread so i will just ask on here.
What kind of tips would you guys recommend? I am looking for dual tips, but cant decide between dumpy's or straight tips?

Ill let you know very soon,As i have just bought a LR2779 to replace the factory VRX muffler on my 2005 TW VRX as the standard one drones like a bugger and sounds like a cow "mooing" on acceleration IMO,The LR2779 should help with these as it runs a "Helmohotz tuner" unlike the standard one and is slighlty quieter aswell,I also bought a lukey Glasspack 4" round muffler come resonator to replace the factory intermediate muffler as well,it is a lukey L0548 P/N and is straight through perforated tube design and is about 150mm longer than standard,so should muffle a bit more and the glasspack design should deepen the tone and keep resonance down as well
