View Full Version : High-pitched Whistle

Hey guys,

My car has developed a new sound that I'm not happy with. Last night it started to make a high-pitched whistling sound while I was driving on the motorway. Initially I thought it was just wind noise hitting the car in a funny way, but it persisted when I got off the motorway at certain revs.

It only happens when the car is in gear and moving along. If I push the clutch in while coast @ 100kph there is no noise, if I have the clutch in and rev the engine while coasting @ 100kph there is no noise, if I release the clutch and accelerate the whistle gets higher and higher pitch until it appears to disappear (or is too high pitched to hear).

This happens at slower speeds too. I had the thought it might be my spice lid, so I put the original resonator back on but the sound remains.

I think I could hear it very very slightly at certain revs when the car is stationary (head was under the bonnet so not sure of the RPM), and it seemed to be coming from the belt that's closest to the firewall.

So, any ideas on what it could be before I drop into the mechanics tomorrow?

Thats a shame man, I just got your voice mail and was waiting for you to show up to change your oil then I read your text message saying you were'nt coming over.... Hope you get it sorted, and make sure they look at your tractor rattle too

Try revving it manually while under the bonnet to see if you can hear where it's coming from

Sounds like your release bearing is worn.

Check all vacuum lines

ive got what sounds like AC induced whine coming from my car somewhere, kicks in at around 2k rpm in each gear, my suspicions lie with an alternator leak causing an AC signal to get to a component that can cause the noise, the horn maybe, who knows. mine is the same, this only happens in gear while driving, not when free revving.

Check all vacuum lines

Yeah I have that thought too, would performance be affected by that? Doesn't seem any different to before the sounds started.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm going over to my cousins place tonight (he's good with cars) and we'll check the things you've mentioned and anything else we can think of before I drop it at the mechs tomorrow.

Any other thoughts people have on this please keep posting :D This sort of stuff freaks me out a little

:stoopid:

Scotty's TL VRX makes the same sort of sound. It comes from the gearbox. Not a big problem, but it's a gearbox out job.

That's what I feared, since it only happens with the car in gear and clutch out. If it turns out to be the source, will it cause me problems, or damage something?

Any ideas how much I'm up for to get it fixed?

You havn't touched your idle screw thing latley have you, mine makes noises like that when the screw is in a certain position.

Nope, never touched it.

+1 for release bearing, didnt i quote you up for one of these not long back?

I'm not sure if you quoted me, but you did post in a thread I made a little while ago, but it was for a squeak related to the gearbox, and you mentioned the throwout bearing. Any thoughts on cost to get it fixed? Worth doing the clutch/anything else at the same time if the box has to come out?

Perhaps most importantly though at the moment is can I drive it without causing damage to anything?

Its a box out job so you might as well replace the Clutch (comes with the bearing from exedy) and the rear main seal, and please for the love of god dont put anything over a standard HD clutch in there if your inclined to do so, its a very easy and quick way to smash your syncros

This what I want? Rough guess on cost and cost of install? And as before, can I still drive the car safely without damage until I get it done?

Since your car is near standard give or take and you have no real ambition for huge power a MBK-7684 or MBK-7684 HD is what you want, dont bother with the HDCB or HDBB clutches as all they will do is give you a popeye leg and destroy your gearbox.

Clutch itself is around 800 give or take, install is about that again, the rear main is around 30 or so and whack another 30min labour on to remove and fit it. I dont reccomend driving it as it is, because if it collapses, you can potentially have the clutch sticking onto the flywheel and will be unable to drive it at all (read cannot change gears)

Scotty is still driving his. I don't know the full extent mechanically wise, to the damage that can be done tho. Be an idea to just get a HD clutch and get your flywheel machined at the same time. I had an Exedy HD clutch in my Ralliart. Drove like stock and held lots of launches and good power.

My car is an automatic and makes a whistling noise once im driving. If I put it in neutral and give it some rev there is no noise, only when I'm driving.

*Might* have another explanation for it, but will have to wait till I've got the noise out of my head to confirm.

Well I'm 90% sure I've found the source of the whistling sound. It occurred to me that it was the sound an old radio makes when you are tuning it, so I turned my attention to the new splits I installed in the front doors about 2 weeks ago. I disconnected the remote wire that fires up the amp when I turn the car on, and went for a drive. As far as I can tell, the noise disappeared. Left the car to sit for about 2hrs and took it for another run. There still appeared to be no noise.

I pulled over and reconnected the amp remote wire, so the speakers fired up. I started driving and I could definitely hear the sound again.

So for now, problem solved. It would appear your suggestion was about right Woob ;)

So was the noise coming from your stereo system or electricals?

MitchellO

I believe it's coming from the passenger side tweeter, will get into the door tomorrow after work and track it down.

AHHHHH! My car started making the exact same noise a few days ago! (sounds like a supercharger when im in second gear!! :D) and now it has occured to me that this problem started when i installed my splits!!! Good! I was running very low on engine oil last week and i was scared that something might have died and was now making that noise!! pheeuuwwff

Seriously, if you think there is a problem with you engine, wouldn't you switch your hectic stereo completely off FIRST THING?

Well yeah, you turn it right down....but that doesnt solve the problem...

Yeah my noise was there until I disabled the amp startup, had nothing to do with the volume level.

Oh damn... i was going to say that someone might have welded a scouts' whistle to your air inlet... lol

MitchellO
01-02-2009, 07:43 PM
Well the whistle may not have been related to the gearbox, but I noticed today that the clutch has started slipping (flares at low revs in 3rd-5th gear when accelerating) so I guess it's going to cost and arm and a leg after all.

Thats a real shame to hear mate....... are you ever going to get it lowered?
