View Full Version : Driveshafts/cv joints, are there different types?

Hey, just wondering, my CV joints are terrible in my white car (2.6 auto) but the ones in my v6 manual are perfect, not to mention the shock absorbers and brakes are alot better aswell. what i was wondering is will the v6 driveshafts fit the 2.6? or are they different? eventually the whole engine and gearbox will go in but some work will be done to it before then:cool: but until that happens, can i use the driveshafst anyway?

I know there are differences, but don't know off-hand what they are. I know there is a different spline count, but not sure if it was V6 vs 4cyl or auto vs manual, or both. Either way, I'm certain that shafts from a manual V6 will not fit an auto 4cyl.
Just get some exchange shafts fitted, there was a thread recently where Madmagna gave the lowdown on costs including fitting.

Fitting is nothing, but not going to specifically go out and buy new cv joints when i have a perfect set that will have to go in within a month or two, unless of course i actually blow one in the 2.6, but i doubt it has the power:bowrofl: guess i'lljust see if the struts will fit for now then

The brake rotors are larger, the calipers are the same however the brackets are also different. The lower control arm on V6 is far better design as well
The drive shafts differ on both outer and inners depending on models. On all the Magna Models the outer spline is smaller than the V6, on the "X" line (Elite, Verada ei and xi) the shaft is larger on the spline
On the Gearbox end there are also 2 different sizes, there are many people who say this month and year to this one = this shaft but I have been proven wrong on many occasions. Best way to tell is grab the shafts from the wreck and count them, same on your drive car
Question, why are you doinga 4cyl auto when you have a v6 manual sitting there? Unles it is real bad, do that one up

Compared to my 4cyl the v6 is in terrible condition.
V6:
v6 executive
no electrics
faded/blistered paint
terrible interior
some spots of rust
a few dents
unregoed
4 cyl:
4cyl se
full electrics
mint interior besides roof liner
decent paint besides a couple of tiny spots, plus it's white and being an se is already colour coded:)
only one dent on the front left guard that can be replaced
no rust
regoed
only thing it lacks is the v6 manual part, which will eventually be swapped over after i sort some issues out with the motor i.e the coolant pipe under the intake manifold and a major oil leak. plus it will probably get some extra bits added while it's out:P
basically, it's easier to get the v6 and manual into the 4cyl than to bring the v6 up to the level of the 4cyl.

A member did this a while back. Except he converted from a 4ayl auto to a 3L DOHC manual.
From what I read, he just had to make a custom engine mount on the passenger side, besides that, was straight forward.

V6 into the 4? mmmmm!!
Sounds like fun!
I'm in the same boat, but the other way around - good TS V6 auto, sad 4 manual.
I figure though it is better (for me) to fix the 4, bacause:
Both cars have cost me a lot of money (for magnas) and I don't want to lose one.
I need 2: One to drive, one to fix. (I do the rego 3 months at a time and swap them)
Parts are cheap and easily available to fix/do up gen 2s.
Some points to consider!

Been there, done that, v6 into 4cyl.
You need to remove the mount off the pass side and then attach it to the 4cyl body. If done properly no one will ever tell it has been done.
In effect the shells are the same, slight differences are in the inner LH guard only. The suspension is also different in so far as spring rate and damper rate, lower control arms and brakes for the front in the V6. The V6 also has a second resinator in the exhaust, 15" wheels, speedo goes to 220 instead of 200
The ideal would be to lift out the running gear and wiring from the v6 and dump the lot into the 4cyl if you really want to go that way. To be honest though, the 4cyl would have to have a body like Catherine Zeta-Jones for me to bother as a respray is not that hard, not is installation of fast glass and other mods. Remember the 4 cyl interior will be a bolt in fir into the v6 car as well.
DOHC TT it, some fool on here is slowly doing one I hear...
