I've got a TW that's due for it's 75000 service. So can someone tell me if the timing belt should be done now as it says in the service manual? I've had a mechanic tell me it's too early and was just after some other opinions.

It's normally done either during the 90000k service or 105000k service, but it's up to you if you think you want it changed. I have a KL thats 94000k and I'll be getting it changed soon.

100,000kms the timing belt should be done. The 75,000kms in the book you're talking about is actually the optional 60 month (I think) service, meaning if the car doesn't get driven a lot.
Wait till 100,000kms.

The tensioner comes in the timing belt kit. I just bought a Dayco kit. Retail was $250, trade was $180.

Yeah, a lot of places will do the water pump with the major service, and it is good insurance.

For timing belt, plugs, leads, all fluids etc you'll be looking at over $1000 including parts. Get a few quotes from Mitsubishi and other local mechanics.

I bought mine TF at 160000km's, and Ive looked at the log books and it says the timing belt was done at 115000km.
Ive got 187000km's on her now, think ill do it at 200000...

If you do it at 100, 200 etc it is also very easy to remember

Any info on how to check timing belt?
sorry if this is already up somewhere? Pics would be great!
Mine's done prolly 130,000 k's since it was last done. The guy I bought it from kept shrugging off the question about 200k service....the baby is still running great at 250k :)
..... for now
There's no way to 'check' a timing belt.
Some belts may last 50thou over he service interval, some may only last 10 thou and then fall apart.
If you're unsure - change the belt, water pump, and mark it down. Atleast you know its done and you wont destroy your engine.

Mate, get it done NOW
I have seen them do over 170k but have also seen them go at 110k
The strength is internal with the kevlar inside the rubber, the only way to check it is to cut it lol Then it is buggered

imo, change timing belt every 100k or 5 yr, i changed my belt on the TJ a few weeks ago, pritty easy really but a rattle gun and air ratchet makes it so much easier, only technical bit is setting the pre-tension, but follow a haynes manual and you shouldnt go wrong, my first time took 5hr's, dont know how that compares.
5hours for a home job I reckon is quite respectable.
Though my mechanic takes around 1.5hours, start to finish

From Mitsu, I've been Quoted $775 for timing belt, tensioner and seals. This is the cheapest I've been quoted so far. At this stage I'm not tempted to do this myself.

That is ridiculously fast. so thats taking off the engine mount and bracket, swapping the belt and pulleys and reassembly?
I find when you snap your timing belt is a great time to replace it

Just been quoted $220 plus parts, the Mitsubishi service schedule says 3 hours for a 3.5 Gen3. The bloke that did it bent one of the vanes which triggers the CPS and smashed the CPS while the car was running... bits of metal everywhere and car stopped. He will fix it no charge but I think he wasn't concentrating as it was 48 degrees in the workshop at the time. Just wondering if anyone knows whether an accident like this would effect the ECU??

He's a mobile mechanic too.
Last time he done a timing belt for me was on my festy, I had the engine mount done, he just came to do timing belt etc. Took him 45mins and car was running again (including waterpump).
I sit back, have 2 beers, and car is running again, some jobs I just cant be stuffed to do when it takes a professional bugger all timelol

Damn, my mechanic quoted me around $600 for the job, including call-out fee.
That also included doing the waterpump at the same time.

IF you rush you can do in 1.5 hours but also risk making mistakes like forgetting to tighten the CAS like happened above
I generally do the full 100k service for most of my customer, generally includes all filters, water pump, plugs etc etc
Only thing that I see often that concerns me is that few mechanics actually tension the belt correctly.
Mal this is one of the few mechanics I trust. He's old school, and services a lot of Magna's so knows them inside and out.
He also doesnt advertise, all his jobs are word of mouth - which I think says a lot for his abilities.

Just changed mechanics to get my starter motor replaced today as my now old one was very unorganised.
Extremely happy with this one, explained everything very clear and even did a free check over.
Now booked in for timing belt next week, no idea when it was done last.
But he quoted me roughly $300, seems cheap right?

Yeah that's what i'm thinking but when he told me he's fairly certain i'd need to replace the timing belt i said "how much will that set me back?" He responded, "Roughly 300 or so".
I can only hope it's including labour!

The timing belt kit alone is $250. So I very much doubt it.
