Hi everyone,

A newbie here with his first post so go easy on me. I've owned my tj vrx for about six years now and I have only just stumbled on to this site, yer I know I dont know what rock I have been hiding under :slap:
Just recently I had a chance to catch up with your very own Madmagna at AMC and he was very helpful and generous with his time. Within a space of 10minutes he spotted some major problems under the hood!! An obvious one was the leaking oil from the cap onto the exhaust manifold which if I hadnt attended to the problem asap my baby would have been all up in flames while I sit there and watch her burn :sook:
Anyway before you all start ripping into me let me explain, just recently I had a reco 5spd tippy put in and when I got the car back there was oil leaking from the cap everywhere so I replaced the seal and drove it up to Mal's for some advice, he noticed the rocker cover had actually been dented just under the cap, the transmission workshop must have knocked the motor around a bit when they had it out :tantrum:
Out of nowhere Mal rips out the tools and starts knocking everything back into place, so we start her up and "tada" no leaks (you probably have figured out by now im not that mechanically minded thats why im here to gain a better knowledge on things from such a great bunch of people:bowdown:) He then looks at me and says "that doesnt sound like a magna?" The hissing noise I actually thought was air being sucked in through the K&N panel filter happened to be (sorry I cant find the technical term for it) a loose pipe leading from the exhaust manifold into the intake manifold!! So Mal does it back up for me and the vrx now purrs like a you know?
Anyway sorry all for such a long introduction I just wanted to share my appreciation for AMC and the members and wondering if anybody has a similar story to mine?
By the way Im looking forward to that major service Mal you really are a top bloke

Welcome aboard bean machine.

I would like to put in a good word for Mal as well. I was planning a Vic trip and wanted to get my car serviced by him. Unfortunately the trip never materialised but via email Mal did give a lot of tips and things to look out for.

Thanks guys, appreciated.

The pipe was the EGR pipe, had come out of the exhaust manifold, sounded terrible and also the bigger risk was monoxide into the cabin through the air vents etc.

engine support bridge (or crane) they used must have been quite low/sitting to close to the engine and used short chains .. this causes the chains to run across the oil filler hole and puts heaps of pressure on it and bends it as a result... then you'll end up with oil coming out of your cap cause it doesnt seal anymore

reason i know is cause i did the EXACT same thing when changing my clutch last month :doubt:

i ended up getting a free 2nd hand rocker cover from a generous forum member so mines all sorted :D

next time round ill make sure the support bridge sits higher and further away from the motor so the chains dont need to run over the rocker cover/s at all

Welcome to the club mate :)

You'll find that AMC is a very helpful bunch of people and will help you where they can.

I've had help from members in the past and I do the same where/when I can.

Welcome to the club! WE're a lucky bunch arent we?

Its a pity im in Tas away from all you goons (no offence)... however, im curious Bean Machine, do u mean oil leaking from your engine oil cap? I reckon madmagna could answer this one too: I get a slight amount of oil, smudged out on my engine cover after a long drive...is that a leak? Is it dangerous? Been driving around with it like that for months now.

Also, is anyone good with electrical circuit boards? Ive got a GPS with a broken AV port and the circuit is fine, just the 'hole' (pardon me) has broken off. Anyone electrically minded and interested in fixing it?

Cheers,
Ozy

The rocker cover was damaged when an un-named repair shop lifted the engine out to change the trans. The oil was pissing out so badly was even on the fire wall.

The seals in these caps are well known for going hard and weeping, while not dangerous, should be replaced

Pop down to DJ's and get the oil cap seal, will set you back about 4 bucks and should stop the leak provided all your breathers etc are in good working order

edit: I think im a little bit obsessed with the emoticons, I'll try to take it easy next time lol
