hey guys
yes i know i should of searched but need info quick
just need to know how do you tell if the resonators had it?
lately my exhaust sounds very different and i have a feeling its the resonator cause the rest of the exhaust is fine
now i'll be going to my exhaust shop tomorrow to book the car in to either have the resonator taken out or have it replaced with a better one
now my current exhaust is RPW race headers > 3" magnaflow hi-flow cat > stock resonator and piping > 6" magnaflow cannon
now the car had a nice beefy note before, but now sounds muffled and drone
any help would be great :)
cars also manual if that helps
thanks rob

Could very well be the centre Muffler or resonator thats knackered,i think they are a 4" centre/centre design muffler standard as they are a straight through design, either louvered or perforated tube,a resonator traditionally is a hollow tube with no packing inside etc ,unlike our standard ones,if they are packed with fiberglass, this can burn or blow out and give the symptoms you described as they no longer have any muffling ability, any chance the cat has collapsed either, worth checking IMO

Im having a new Lukey L0548 straight through glasspack muffler fitted to my TW VRX to replace the standard one as im having the same problem as you,and mine is stadard ATM,also putting on a tuned LR2779 to see if i cant get rif of the last bit of drone aswell,as the VRX standrd muffler hasnt got the helmhotz tuner in like the lr2779 does,it all helps!,the lukey L0548 is approx 450mm long (100mm longer than standard) and has more packing i dare say as its fairly weighty, and will fit in the standard tunnel ok aswell as i have checked,so should do a good job on cutting resonation as the longer the muffler/resonator,the better

hope it helps

I took the resonator out of my TW two weeks ago. It was straight through and perforated. It made it sound raspy (angry bees in a milo tin). Had it refitted. Now the Lukey growl (LR-2779) is back. The rest is stock.
Not sure if the info helps.

so we'll see how she goes :)

well car went in today to get the center muffler replaced with a hotdog
cars alot more louder then it was before but not too loud
sounds abit better then before but its still to early to tell
i thought the center muffler was causing my problems but it was fine
so i may have a loose mount somewhere or something
sounds alittle tinny atm and is quiet cursing around 80k's but gives out a roar when opening the throttle
do these hotdogs sound different after they get run in?
if the sound is still tinny might need another one wacked on :)

also the exhaust seems to move around abit when its idling, meaning it shakes heaps
dunno if its normal or not

Well Im very happy with mine, slighly less noise than the standard VRX muffler and the new resonator deepened the note and it sounds better in that you can slightly hear the cylinders fire seperately instead of the continuos "mooing" sound it once had

As for your system,if it was a true resonator or hotdog fitted,it will have no packing in it at all,so nothing to "burn in" at all.so no change in sound,if its glass packed,it will deepen and get slighly louder over time,if this didnt fix your problem, the only thing left to queery is the magnaflow muffler unfortunately, worst comes to worst,go the LR2779 if you want a controlled mellow sound that wont annoy you i reckon,oh,i have heard adding more than 1 resonator can cause a "wooshing" sound, might pay to check with the muffler man

As for the shaking,if all the mounts and rubber hangers are fine, not much you can do,but if he only cut out,put in the centre pipe,i dare say it would be further down the line that the problem exists with hangers etc

TBH i have no idea what type was fitted, forgot to ask what type i was getting
i'll give it a week and see how it goes, but i'm thinking it may be a loose/worn out mount somewhere
is there anyways of checking this?

oh and yes hotdog was pretty much a cut in and weld up job (as in the pipework)
only had a quick look under and the hotdog seems long, dunno if i would be able to fit another one behind it, hmmm
i think it was a 15" hotdog that was fitted, and its also stainless steel

It seems the thing to do at the moment, as I just put mine in today also, to have the mid section replaced due to rattle and vibration in the first of the two resonators. All I know the whole section just bolts on, and a hotdog will be fitted. I'm not after a louder or a particular sound, just so that it sounds the same.

They won't change.

When I had my exhaust done, I had hotdog put in with the promise it won't sound like a wet fart. I drove out, and it sounded beefy...until I put it under load and it sounded not like a wet fart....but 2 wet farts.

A few days later I had the hotdog replaced with a muffler style resonator.

2 wet farts,jesus your going rough!:D

but your spot on,a resonator just changes the resonant frequency of the pipe,it doesnt "muffle" at all

hmmm will see if i like it or not
sounds tinny until it gets abit of heat through it
might either wack on another hotdog or replace it with a resonator

Replace it with a hotdog. My resonator cracked and my exhaust guy chucked one on for $90. Was a bit quieter at first but after working it in a bit it sounded better than before.

it was replaced with a hotdog, my center muffler that is
cant seem to find where the resonator is
it might be sounding different cause of the cannon on the back
atm i dont really mind the sound as it seems to roar when the throttles fully opened
might be able to get acouple of sound clips :)

All I know the whole section just bolts on, and a hotdog will be fitted. I'm not after a louder or a particular sound, just so that it sounds the same.

Picked up the car after lunch and everything was nice and quiet. I took it for a drive to Eastgardens Shopping Centre in Pagewood, where I use a steep ramp to go up to the top level. As I went up the ramp the rattle not vibration was back. When I parked the car I left the engine running and just knelt down and pumped the accelerator to recreate the noise which I did. It came from the same place prior to the new middle section being replaced, which meant the cat conv.

So I took it back to my mechanic and told him the noise was back. I asked him if he thought it was the cat conv, and he is sure it's not. He said when he fitted the new section, the rear muffler sounded different as if it had a hole in it, but it didn't. His idea is that the baffles may be loose and reverberating back up the pipe towards the front. Both of us didn't have time to put it on the hoist, but will do so asap. If it turns out to be the rear muffler, he will only charge me for the part, not labour.

Any idea how much a standard rear muffler with the 2 pipes out the back cost?

yep, after giving it abit under load it sounded like a wet fart or like a lancer/excel with a big cannon :doubt:
will be booking it in to either get another hotdog put on or replaced with a normal resonator
sounds good when cruising tho

anyone wanna buy a near new hotdog? lol

Just make sure whatever you get has some packing in it and is as big as can fit!,but at the end of the day the rear muffler has the main influence on note
