Trido

I have a 2000 TJ vrx and the past few weeks I have noticed that occasionally after turning the car on and then putting it into drive, that it will lag a second and then jerk as it goes into first gear. Never used to do that. Any idea what it might be?

My car does this when cold as well of late. Because of where I live, I can only reverse into the garage so the slight thump to the trans is only the first selection to Drive from Park when exiting again. If i put it back into neutral and reselect drive, smooth as silk.
I thought it may just be some sort or immediate lack of oil for the first few seconds, Who knows?

Check atf colour and level. Adjust or replace if not okay. Computer may need to be retrained. The procedure is on this site many times over. Worst case scenario it could be an early warning sign of gearbox problems. Good luck, hope it okay. I've had some experience with a dead tj gearbox.

mine occasionally does this in reverse first start of the day. just makes a clunky noise once, doesnt seem like anything major, probably just cold gearbox with no oil flow. asked about it at the 100k service and the mechanic dismissed anything major. just ask next time you're getting something done if its not too bad
