Found this hanging in my boot today, hadnt noticed it before? At closer inspection looks like iv either hit something with it or its exploded (not good), but have no idea what its used for or where its from. Best guess i have is, courtesy light; but ive never had one in my boot since owning the car and im pretty sure there are pieces of glass in my boot atm, so must be recent??

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers. JM

it looks like an after market T10 wedge bulb holder. because the boots have a festoon connection.

What about the brake light that sits on the parcel tray/rear window!

Also known as a high mount brake light - sits on the parcel shelf but the globe goes in from the boot. Check that this brake light is working - looks like it came loose and shorted on the bodywork.

Agree with everyone else, and will add it looks broken too. I got one from the wrecker last year for $5. They break with age and heat in them - mind was in a couple of pieces when it came out.

Do u have a light in your boot working..?? I see the cover in the second pic right on the edge. You said you have never had a light since owning..

That is normal for them to brown and melt like that.

Take the 2 nuts off (in second pic) and pull the light itself off the parcel shelf. That way you can check for damage on the globe holder hole and see if the socket still fits correctly. Replace everything that is broken (if you can afford it) or put a new globe in the socket and glue it in if the socket is loose in the light, then feed the wire through the hole. Should see you right for the next 10 years.

AS Jason (I think, cbf looking back in the thread) pointed out, your boot light is the white plastic "bubble" on extreme right of second pic.

To remove lens: Grab it gently, or gently lever from one edge - it has two plastic lugs/clips on either side which clip onto the slots in the sheet metal - you can also see the pass side slot in that 2nd pic you posted. Inside you will find a simple festoon bulb holder.

You can buy a new bulb for a couple of buck, or if you like get an LED bulb for slightly more. Boot light is quite handy - I've raided self-serv wreckers now and then to get extras - but have not yet "got around" to adding a second boot light in the cars.

TIP: If you tend to leave the boot open for long periods, you could consider chopping a switch into the loom connecting the boot light, to avoid flat battery from boot light left on. Ashamed to say I've had to jump-start a couple of times due to leaving boot open in the shed for looong periods. Once again, I've yet to act on this theory in my own cars.

BTW: I got a 2-"cell" 31mm Festoon LED bulb from Jaycar for an interior light - was a bit worried about degree of brightness - but its great (It was a super-bright version). If I get to a Jaycar anytime soon, I'd be tempted to get more of these to put in boot lights...... forget how much it was, maybe 10 bucks? No doubt Fleabay is cheaper.

Sweet. Thanks guys, after closer inspection it is my brake light on the parcel shelf. i found the socket and most of the globe (glass bit) is still in the socket, so im going to have to get the glass out before i can chuck another one in!

Questions:

What type/size globe is the one in the socket and can i just get one from autobarn/repco?

Does anyone else think this is broken? or will i just be able to replace the globe.

On the boot light side of things, if i was looking into putting a neon in my boot, would i but able to just solder the neon wires to the boot light ones?
OR
Would if be easier to just buy a blue LED light for the factory boot light?

Cheers. JM
