Hey guys what rpm does a 3.5l rev to? Before the rev limited kick in? as with my engine swap I'm still running my old ecu. As it's now manual I can rev it to 7000rpm and I've been to scared to go higher as I'm not sure if my limited still works
i think its 6750 but it might be possible to see 7000 flash up on the counter

it's a rev limiter :D
and i wouldn't put 100% accuracy on it.. but my tacho turns up to about 6900 thats even in 2nd gear winding out..

my dads old \TH wagon was a 3.5 auto and it limited at about 7100rpm
I know my 3L TH revs just under 7,000 (6,800 I think) when I rev in N...

i've done it once in the wet, took off to fast and i put the foot down and went to 7500, then i quickly changed to 2nd. it sounded cool though

yeh i have hit leaving it in tippy:redface: Mind you unless you have done some work to your engine, when hitting the redline you are well past your maximum power output and should be changing gears alot sooner to keep the car accelerating faster.

My old manual TF used to hit 7,000rpm on a regular basis and it did it smoothlly. After the 3.5 conversion, it seamed to valve bounce around 6,800rpm, didn't like being there at all...lol

Yeah thanks guys. It still pulls at around 7 and is quite smooth up there. But I still don't think I'll be doing that much

they will still keep pulling...just not as hard and wasting time (if racing) and not as good for motor i wouldnt imagine

Meh... Commodore owners getting ****y "Listen to that POWER!!"... So I slip it to N and put them to shame, extra 1k on the redline ftw!

I had my 3.0 apart after I converted to a 3.5 and it was still in perfect condition. Still had the original hone marks on the bores after 198,000km. I did change the oil and oil filter every 5,000km though. was still going strong when I pulled it out (and it used to get driven hard), only upgraded for more power.....lol
Basically if you maintain your car and dont' abuse it, it'll run fine reving within it's limits, they arn't scared a few high rpm excursions.
Thats what a rev limiter is for
the old X16XE Ecotec 1.6 from the Barina GSi was good for 10,000RPM as long as you uprated the internals accordingly, and stripped down and rebuilt it every 10,000miles
Well I dunno maybe its an old wives tale but I thought reving it like that in neutral, not under load was a no no.

Well in neutral with no load, probablly not the best idea to be doing repeatedlly as it can glaze the bores. But driving, if you need to stretch that 2nd gear a fraction more as you'r pulling through a tight bend and changing to 3rd will hinder momentum, then I say rev it out...lol Or ofcourse you could be rev matching a touch to earlly into a 2nd gear sweeper then if it hits 7K then so be it....ahhh I miss my Magna a little :(

Speaking to a bloke who used to use these engines in v6 sprintcars: stock engines plus massive revs all season with basically just an oil change at each meet, then pulled down the engine to do bores/rings/bearings at the end of the season and apparently could still see the factory hone marks and the bearings, rings etc were like brand new. This was under race conditions. These are a damn well built engine!

The V6 sprints only use the old "2 valve" 3.0L engine as well which arnt as strong as the later 4 valve ones.
They maybe classed as stock but you wanna see how much work goes into prepping one of them for a V6sprint, go up and ask Nev Hall about the 3 he built last year for them

every car i own gets serviced every 5000km, doesnt mean you should do stupid things for no gain like revving it hard i neutral or burnouts, id rather break my car going fast than going stupid

Is he still into that? I got my info from a bloke called Gordon Whitrow from here in the bridge. Loves his engines a little bit too much i reckon, and still has a bit to do with the speedway.

Yeah Katrinas husband races in the V6 sprints thats why Nev has built some of them engines up. Gordon Whitrow works at moores doesnt he?
