Yep, so it happened last night accelerated out of a corner and lost power and have developed a large metallic ticking noise (its not bottom end its more of a higher pitched noise then that) im thinking maybe a broken valve spring/rocker gear.

Anyone have this sort of issue before?

Oh and heres a picture for the trolls:

Thats not good, how much power was lost in a est percentage value?

Just hope you didn't snap all your valves like Jason did...

Take your front rocker cover off firstly, see if anything has broken in the valvetrain up there.
Not good though :(

i'd pull your super charger cover off first, followed by rockers. Then drain the oil. Could be a valve spring, could be a busted rotor in the charger.

Yeah could be about 10 things right off the top of my head, i pulled the blower cover and valve cover off and couldnt see anything out of the ordinary, going to pull the belts and the timing cover off after tea and have a squizz there

You've killed 2cars in as many days! Got any pics of the missing valve?

Sorry I couldn't chat today, I was flat chat with a breakdown, customers were nagging me about simple s*** (best reason for adults to learn to read), I had 3.5hrs to do 8hrs work and I have a 3dr festiva to drive for another 2weeks as Argo are asleep at the wheel re my forged conrods. :doubt: So um, how was your day!

Little update, its now at the mechanics, its isolated the noise to the front head (which i already knew) but was supposed to ring back with the dianosis but didnt, so i shall go down to see what is up tomorrow. But have a few cars lined up to look at on the weekend, one of them a 2003 M3 beemer

Lets just hope that it is a collapsed lash adjuster.

Have had this happen myself, it feels like a cyl has dropped and knocks like a bastard

Not going to release all the details about it just yet, but long story short it is currently sitting in the middle of no mans land with no front bumper, bent RHF chassis rail and broken K frame

Mechanic doesnt have a clue on where the noise is, still mainly assumptions, he did find however the timing belt loose and afterhand cranking the motor it tightened back up, also noted that the car is now idling perfect again however the noise is still there. Also he said its very hard to hand crank it compared to other cars.

I had a quick peek at the M3 a g6e (the turbo one) and a SS today, very very very impressive cars to say the least

Yep, E46 M3 would be an absolute ripper, reckon it's the best looking 3-series too.

$45K!!! Did it spend a month at the bottom of a lake or something??

I looked at it today, really needs a good clean (its covered in road grime) and maybe a service, the gearbox is tight, motor feels sold all the way to redline, the leather needs a good hit with cleaner and protectant as its starting to go dry. And also some rear tyres as they are a bit iffy.

Will know more by sunday when i get a friend to have a look (owns a bmw performance shop in thornton and has a m3 as well but an AC shiender one)

the magnas are pretty hard to hand crank Daniel. Don't fprget, you have the charger to rotate too. Give me a buzz on the weekend and i might be able to have a geezer.

hey my cambelt sits a little slack between cams when engine stops, and tightens on rotation, the timing remains correct. it is normal . my belt was replaced 40tho ks. with your main issue im guessing a lash adjuster has failed leaving alot of play and not opening valve fully, hence the noise and power loss. it will be bouncing on cam and valve. id not run the engine to avoid possible cam damage if i am right, just a guess! :D

Spoke to the mechanic again today, he has spoken to a few other builders and they are resonably stumped on what it is, so the plan is get it on monday, get my crap together and get this new 6g74/75 have it ready for insertion, then whip on the drag slicks and see how long it will last at 6800rpm.

Then fit new motor then flog it off to the nearest joe blow.

Here we go, drove it back home from the mechanics today, could barely idle had to rest the foot on the motion pedal to keep it from stalling, however 2 small bumps (by mean i could barely feel them even with 300lb springs) and the noise dissappears and the idle goes back to normal

Am scratching my head now

thats strange
maybe a loose/faulty wire connection or something?

Dunno how that would cause the ticking in the front head

Checked all the Maf connector and Map sender etc etc to find they were all in correctly (this is when it first took a dump)

Well think i have found the issue.

When i went to move the car into one of the wash bays to get it out of the heat it was making the noises and idling bad again, so i pop the bonnet and it promptley cut out. went to start it, was hard to turn over and when it did start, lots of belt screech on the supercharger tensioner pulley. It has seized. After relooking very close at mine vs raptors im pretty sure they are the same (am planning on measuring brads tomorrow when i get a spare belt (hoefully)

I thought you would have known what the problem sound was from a distance...... you seem to know everything else about well everything  Only joking good luck with the fix !

Not really, it doesnt explain the random ticking, but does explain the odd idle. I had my thoughts on what it could of been, broken rocker or valve spring, jumped teeth on timing belt, blower timing out, lash adjuster, lifter etc etc, what this thread was about is to see if anyone else had a similar issue so i didnt have to wind out buttloads of coin to find out what the issue was.

Im smart with my money, no point wasting it on pointless crap unless i really feel like it
