i was at my local pick-a-part and noticed the rear muffler on a 3l GDI had a curved pipe coming off one end of the muffler and joining up at the other end. its about 2.5" thick and has a cable coming off it. any idea wat this is? im assuming its somesort of bypass valve to open the rear muffler up at high revs. is it worth buying and puttin on my 3.5l??? cheers

it wont. It's just a muffler designed to double circulate the gasses so it is more efficient. The cable you see is something you will find on many cars of that era, particularly in japan. It basically closes when the water temp of the engine is cold to help warm it up by restricting the engine and causing it towork harder and warm up quicker.

One car maker to use this technology alot is mazda in the late 80's to early 90's on a few australian delivered models and almost their entire jdm range.

EDIT: Supra_t, that sounds like one of the mufflers that X-Force brought out a few years ago. Similar design qualities but without the valve.
