View Full Version : Should I tune to 98 ron?

Off to Motor cafe 101 tomorrow. Getting my greddy tuned after manual conversion and extractors installed. I know there are performance benefits from ron 98, but when fuel goes up in price, standard unleaded is what I use. So the question is, if I tune for 98, and but run on standard, will this be detrimental to my engine or my performance? Or should I just tune for standard?
Cheers

if they tune your timing to 98, you will be stuck with it.
as 3rd gen doesnt have a knock sensor, to retard the timing when kncking is detected.
however if you tune it to 98 you will get better fuel economy and more power.
so your not loosing as much money as you may think
edit: you could allways go half way, and tune it to 95
using premium will keep your injectors cleaner too!
its what im planning to do

Well that's the big Q. Performance costs money. I run and tune for 98 and with the higher octane in NA you can gain a lot of advance. Also remember that a good tune might lean out the lower rpm settings at part load where your daily driving is, so you will be using less fuel. So the cost of filling up is higher but you're travelling further so you're about level in the end. Get the 98 tune - you only live ONCE!

Completely agree. When I had my Ralliart tuned, the tuner said he took a lot of fuel out of it in the 2000-5000rpm band, meaning I used less fuel. Tuning for 98 will be more benificial in the long run for you considering you get more KMs out of it, and realisitcally, at 13c more than regular unleaded, it's only $7-$8 more per tank when you fill up with 60 odd liters, but then you get money back with more KMs.

Unless you're gonna have a problem with getting 98RON fuel , get it tuned for 98 RON, it's a no brainer.
Apart from a bit of extra grunt, the extra cost of 98 RON will be negated by the improved fuel economy you'll have, from being able to run more ignition advance. Also 98 RON fuels tend to have detergents which help fight carbon buildup in your motor, keeping it cleaner.
There's nothing to lose and everything to gain (unless availabilty of 98 RON fuel is a problem). Do it.

I'm with all the stupids above re 98 tune.
But i guess you could always run 2 different tunes with a piggy back ECU that can switch between 2 maps (like the SMT6 for example). Only issue here would be that you'd have to wait until you filled up again before you could switch between 91 and 98 tunes.
On second thoughts go for a 98 tune instead lol

Honestly here is my experience...
Before I had the tune, and used 98RON fuel, I actually used more fuel than if I used 91RON fuel.. That's coz the car is tuned to use 91RON fuel...
After I had it tuned to 98RUN (SKR Tune) it became much more efficient running on 98RON which was expected, and got more power out of it... So yeah, it got better 'fuel economy' when using 98RON fuel when compared to the car having a 91RON tune.... In the end, you just get more power, but still have to fill up just as often as when it was 91RON tuned and using 91RON fuel :) Plus its better for the engine.

I'm looking into this at the moment and from what i've heard it's the best $500 you can spend on your car!.... or a little more if you get it done in nsw.

I want to do this as well, tune my VR-X TJ2 for 98. Its run 98 all its life and its sweet.
But given I have the VR-X exhaust will I get any power benefits? Surely something?

Also, who does the ECU flashing in SA and how much roughly should one expect to pay?
Also, cause Mitsubishi is servicing my car, if they go ahead and routinely reset the ECU will I loose my flashed ECU?

SKR- Steve Knight Racing do the ECU re-flashes. Resetting the ECU wont remove the flash....I am happy to be proven wrong though.

im getting a dyno tune soon for my 3.8 once i get the exhaust sorted and im expecting a big difference from the ralliart tune

correct, it won't remove the tune and Mitsubishi won't know it has been tuned either. (they are idiots anyway)

does any one actually have numbers on the improvement in economy they got or what is expected,
is it 20, 50 80 km more a tank
really interested in doing it but if the increase is marginal i might not
and who does it in Melbourne ?
thanks

they could, i had a mechanic plug in a diagnostic computer in and it was reading the engine stats, and it was showing a more advanced timing, he asked me why is it running so advanced?

improvement in economy is difficult to say. There are too many factors involved that can affect it. ie driving style, traffic etc etc...
I noticed I use about as much fuel now with 98RON as what I did when car was tuned to 91RON and using 91RON fuel... I get about 500 - 530km average per tank on 98RON now, driving to work and back on major roads but not on motorways... with 91RON i got about 480 - 510km average... so dunno if I can call that an improvement. I retuned to get more power... not to save fuel ;)

What did you tell him? The motor is a prototype for when Steve Knight was working for mitusbishi motor plant? ;) And if he has no idea who Steve Knight is... he shouldn't be working there

If you can find a tuner who is familiar with using ECUFlash on Evo 7/8/9s, then there are ECU definition files available for TJ onwards ECUs that they can use.

I can flash in a 98 "GTP" tune (its a road version of the old GTP race magna tune) for you. Its what i use to run in my car way back in 2001.
Otherwise if you want a full dynod "custom" tune then SKR will do it for you, he has all my ECUflash Def files to do it. Normally his dyno tunes are around the $600 range pending on car and mods of course.

Pulse racing will do it for $650. You will need a compatible ECU though - Where in Sydney are you?

Hey Jase, would you really get much out of it though with say a stock 3.5 vrx and ralliart cams? I'd be interested in giving it a crack if it will increase driveability.

If you are able to drop by ctown on the weekend I can read your ecu and determine if flashable, ad if by forward the rom to our resident expert to get some defs made up. Flick me a pm.

That's what Steve used on mine. Uploaded that tune and then continued changing values from there.. Got 10kw atw out of it...
