View Full Version : KJ Verada Parkers/Position Lamp - 21W bulb?

Folks,

KJ Verada - has the parker/postion lamps down in the bar...... needed to replace a bulb, seemed to be a 5W bulb down there with size of base = BA15S.

Identical sized bulbs can be had at 5W or 10W, (kind of a bullet shape) and a larger bulb (flared shape) is 21W.

In the absence of any LED's suitable available locally, I've stuck a 21W bulb in, compared it to the 5W on opp side and like the brighter one. Has anyone tried this and suffered problems of excessive heat in the lens etc?

IF I can find a nice super-dooper bright white LED to suit that fitting, I will eventually go that way.... but hope the 'extra bright' parkers might make a more-visible Day Running Light. Just don't wanna melt the lenses, as 21W is often used for brake or blinker and they are not constantly on like a parker bulb .......

Opinions welcomed, experiences especially welcome.

I thought mine were 25w, but they might be 21w. Theres a pic in my av, they're nice and bright. have been like that for a couple months now too and havent had any issues. I drive with my lights on all the time, and ive done a couple long trips (2hrs+) with lights on and havent had any melting issues.

I run 21w parkers, have done for over a year now, and haven't had a problem.

Feeky, Ace - THANKS !!! 21W parkers for me then. Sorted.

I am still possibly keen to swap parkers for blinkers, as I have seen on here - but I want it to be reversible and would prefer to make some kind of loom extension rather than cut/splice into stock loom.

I'm also gonna think about using the unlit portion of the "position lamp" lens - around the side, like a clear reflector...... I'd like to play with some kind of slim LED in there - possibly an amber "mini-repeater" - but will have to wait for a trip to Sydney (or at least somewhere with a Jaycar shop, or other source of LED options).

Thanks again fellas - might just pop outside and admire my brighter parker bulbs for a bit............

Been running 21W for years, looks way better.

Should be simple enough, I wired a set of the Diamante red position lamps up, to make them like a "mini-repeater" as you say it'd just be a matter of wiring them to the indicator rather than the tail lamp on the back of the light....

On that note I still have my stock non-lit Verada ones in the shed, may have a look tomorrow and see if the red backing is removeable rather than hacking up a fluoro cover as has been done by a member or 2...

I think he means the side of the position lamps themselves, there is an unused portion of them that might be removable.

Gas-Hed/Ace,

Yep, I did initially mean the side area of the front-bar parker/position-lamp. Then, of course, that got me thinking about the red reflector in the side if the rear bar as well.......

The Rear Position Reflector - its got a silver paint on the back of the red reflector. I'd probably rather try to get a set of the US lamps, than stuff around with LEDs and removing that silver paint. One E-bay shop I've ordered stuff from (not arrived yet) has short LED strips moulded in jelly-bean waterproof plastic - those behind the red reflector lens might be OK, I guess.

I quite like the white-lenses from fluoro-covers that some have posted-up too - but I've still gotta get me some lamp-units to replace the reflector. I think it may have been Onkytonk who did the white-lens mod??

Gas-Hed - still lovin' my under-door lamps (I used LED strips) inspired by your CCFL thread!!

Would love it if you could post up a how-to of this (or have you already?), as I would like to do this to my car too, but don't know where to start!

HI,

This is the post which inspired me....

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52486&highlight=Verada+Door+Courtesy

Should be a posting by GasHed.

I dunno how to do all the cool "Linky"-in-blue-writing stuff that some of you guys do.... Hope that gets you there!!

When I went to buy the same CCFL's at Jaycar, most stores had sold out - went to several in Sydney and couldn't get the white ones I wanted. I ended-up buying a strip of white LED's about 25-30cm long - mounted on circuit board kind of stuff, and you could cut strip here and there (every 3 LEDs) and just solder pos/neg wires to the circuit board.

I used 2 sets of 3 LEDs, gave just about the right length to fit the recess under the door trim, between the heads of two nuts/bolts. The LED strip was sold in a clear square "tube" packing, and I cut that to length and bogged the ends with silastic after soldering my power wires. Then I just glued/silastic'd the now-waterproof LED unit to the door between the bolts, its all hidden by the bottom of the door card.

I ran the power/ground wires up to the courtesy lights in the door (I have KJ and TJ Sports, so have those oval lights which come on when door opened). I got slack - this happens often - and just soldered the bare ends of the wires to stiffen them up, and poked into the back of the door lamp-holder, then taped the LED wires to the loom - occasionally I get a poor connection but a thump of the door card or twiddle of the oval door light gets the LEDs lit again. One day I will splice them in properly. By using one of those spring-loaded pick-up grabber tools, I didn't even remove the door trim, just loosened a few clips at lower edge and rear edge of the door card and poked the wires through.

Gas Heds post had luvly pics etc.

I think one Ebay store I've noticed has similar, possibly better LED options - what I bought at Jaycar cost nearly $50- IIRC, but I have done 2 cars with it and have enuf for one door left over somewhere.

Check Out the GasHed insirational thread, and adapt as you see fit!!!
