What doesn't kill her, will only make her stronger. There's good news and bad news. The good is that I've found a new cylinder head. The bad is that it might set me back $500.

The problem was that both cylinder head 2 and 4 were cracked. Not a hairline either... it was a valley. I'm gueesing the problems started when my engine started overheating. I replaced the radiator hoping that it didn't cause any more problems then that... turns out I was wrong.

A guy also told me that the changing season weather probably also contributed to the cracking.

I'll post some pics I got today.

I also took the oppurtunity to clean every inch of the engine bay and block. Sorry for the poor pictures.

Heck, I'd have given you my spare cylinder head, if it weren't in the car when it was removed...

Gav, have you found the car?

No, none of the wreckers over this end of town has it. There's two scrap metal merchants who I've not had a chance to try, in Seaford and Dandy.

Hey thanks for the support guys, but guess what... she's up and running again!! She broke down Tuesday night and we had it going again Thursday night... How's that for service! There was a little bit of fuss getting the timing chain right but all problems are solved now... hopefully.

Got some pics of the new head, plus also some shots of the leftover water vapour pouring out from the exhaust. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get the water out.

how did you go about finding that out? water from the coolant system i imagine, unless there is a huge head gasket leak or actual structual head damage this rarely occurs?
ever try compress water? it doesn't and u should have bent a rod if its as bad as you said. i find it a little hard to believe

I found out the problem by removing the cylinder head from the block. Nothing was plainly visible at first but when I pulled out the valves from the head, number 2 and 4 valve chambers were cracked, letting the radiator coolant in. It was nothing to do with gaskets.

Nothing's wrong with the block. I filled the cylinders with oil and left them overnight. Next morning there was no drain off, so that was fine.

You say that this rarely occurs? The bloke I got the new head off showed me 4 other heads that were cracked from other 1st Gens in the past month.
