Now, can anyone work out which is the stuff that came out of the tranny and which is the one going in?

I'd hope the darker one is the one that you're throwing out.

just wait till I drain mine
Should be the same viscosity as my 20w 50 oil and the same colour
Looks like old engine oil lol
Note to self - check ATF.

Just out of interest, is this normal colour if say its never been changed and the cars done 130k?
Seems to be no problem at all, changes fine...

Mine was almost that colour until a couple of weeks ago, got a power flush at mistu and its driving alot better changes quicker, smoother, no flaring and faster response in tippy mode. Power flush highly recommended.
I imagine mine would look something like that atm... Need to book it in for a tranny service within the next 3 weeks.

I killed the original and then the replacement gearboxes on my TJ from neglect (and a little bad luck). The 3rd one is still going strong and has outlasted the first two put together because, I believe, it gets treated to fluid changes twice a year.

out of curiosity, do these fluids generally get changed in general servicing?

If you flush the fluid once, then there should be no old oil in there, can't see why you'd do it again.
Getting the tranny oil is a good idea though, got it done in my Verada at 117000kms and it was much smoother afterwards.

Normal servicing? No, I *believe* (don't quote me) it's in the book listed for change every 100000kms or something.

Mine was that colour or even darker and it stank I really do not know how long it was in there for
Changed it and drove to Syd and back and a few hundred kms running around down there
Got back home and droped it again so it was in there for about 2500 to 3000 kms and about 2 months and it was dark but no where as bad as before
The fresh stuff had been in there for about 3 weeks and about 500 kms and it is still nice and red on the dip stick and it changes a lot better
