This morning I took my car to Tyre Power for tyre service and balance. When I went to pick up my car I noticed the car key was in the ignition on ACC. When I tried to start the car...nothing happened. The battery was flat. They jumped started my car on off I went.

On the way home, I noticed my stereo was reset. Anything else in the car resets/changes after a flat battery in this situation?

Should there be any problem with battery after it charges again?

I would have them do a load test on that battery to see if it will hold a charge as they can read 12+ volts at the terminal due to a surface charge, but fail if they have a decent draw, especially if it was completely discharged (not good for them at all),if it tests ok,i would throw it on a battery charger overnight as an alternator will not charge a flat battery, only a charger will do this

Oh,if shes auto it may need to re-learn shift patterns etc and same with the ECU = rough shifts and idle till its re-learned)

Did you tell them about what happened?,if they did it they may be up for a new battery

They said to take the car for a drive (5-10minutes) and it'll be fine. I'll take it to Mitsubishi to have it charged. Is it urgent to have it charged very soon?
I'm just driving to work and home...nothing much

Is there any certain way I should drive, while it relearns?

Just drive normally, no drama's.
Was the fan left on, that will flatten the battery quick smart, have a look a the lead walls in the battery, if they are coated in white stuff, it's on its way out.
I you got too it early enough the battery may recover, but it wont be the same...

Just drive "normally" it should learn from you.

Many would say disconnecting a battery for 20-30 mins in modern cars is a good way to do a minor retune... makes sense if you think about it.

As for the battery it should rebuild and hold charge if it is a good battery and relatively new.

Sheesh where I work all you need to do is walk in stomp your feet and you will get anything replaced... if you are really worried, just push them for a new one... it was pretty silly to have left it on Acc anyway... they will try their luck that you wont push it... your business is more important to them (or should be) than a battery is to replace.

Oh, and if idling to recharge a battery, turn on the hazards, it works faster for some strange reason that I cant remember.

while driving they dont take long to charge back up at all...

happened to me when i wired amp up. accidently put it on the constant 12v. drained bat over night.

saying that, if u find it turns over slowly id go back and get them to give u a new battery to be honest.

Just to be sure, before you turn the key, turn off any accessories you don't need (ie radio, air con, wipers, headlights) to start the car... once you're moving, go for your life, the battery will be happy.

you cruel buggers!,i bet you would hear a high pitched whistle coming from the alternator, this is telling you its working overtime, not good for it,get that battery on a charger and do it properly if it was flat,a alternator shouldnt be used to charge a dead flat battery as it will get too hot and fry the diodes and insulation, old school generators will charge batteries no worries, but not modern alternators without possible damage.

How many people usually have a battery charger handy though? ok relying on the alternator may not be the best method to get things back to "normal" but the most often used in a break down.

I'd say most people have no choice but to rely on the alternator... I know I have.

Hey, for once I actually agree with you 100% :D

If you ahve a dead battery, do not use the alt to charge it, it will fry

If leaving the acc on for a few hours killed the battery, I would say it may be on its way out anyway. Fan does not run on accs, only really radio and unless it was pumping loud should not kill it

How old is the battery

Glad I said IF...

It was just the way they did it at TNT car carrying, Something about pulsing and current.
That was I got to drive my first Ferari..... and Aston Martin.....and Steer a V8Supercar....Targa Porsche....etc....

The battery is 2 years old. How long should the battery last? I'll take it round to Mitsubishi and get them to charge it for me.

just a quickie, why mitsubishi?,it is best to charge it slowly over night to get max charging capacity, then again i wouldn`t let mitsubishi work on my pushbike unless i had to lol!,so it may be worth buying a decent charger, always needed sometime or rather, batteries generally can last 4-5 years possibly, thats if it hasnt had too may discharge cycles etc, many variables though

Cheer steve

They charged the battery in my other car before. I know the guys at Mitsubishi. There's only one guy from Mitsubishi that works on my ralliart. I've known him for quite a number of years so I trust him with my car.
