how do you test a starter motor out of the car
a diagramme would be usefull or arrows on picture
starter all back togeather
I have a 12v battery
booster cables positive(red) and earth (Black)
where do the cables hook up to
what do you arc to get it to kick over (turn the little cog)

stick it in a vice or on the ground with your foot on the field housing,stick the negative clamp on the starter housing (i use the mounting ears),then put the postive clamp on the main big terminal on the solenoide (the one up the very top with the nut on it (now get a jumper wire and touch one side on the +ve clamp the other on the the little push on blade terminal,it should motor and chuck the pinion out each timer you bridge it this way,you will get a good sized spark when doing this as they have a big draw
BTW,that starter looks like it has seen better days,how are the bushes, brush`s etc?,and this test will not show a slipping clutch ,sometimes you need to shove a block of wood into the teeth while running to put it under load etc

just hook ya negative to the body of the starter, like on that mounting hole, and touch ya positive on the white wire sticking up. ha yha to quick steevo
