Im told its a series of clips which come off leading the lining to fall. Aparently pulls out through the rear door.
I havent done it, so ill be listening in also.

Take off the sunvisors, jesus handles, front and rear strips on the glass, interior lights, strips on both sides and anything else in the way
Recline the seats and the lining will manouver out the back door ..................... eventually
its cardboard so be careful
take off the lining by peeling it (chances are itll just fall off
shake yur head in amazement at how much orange spongey **** goes everywhere
scrape off the remaining orange spongey ****
buy some more sponge and fabric
apply a heat resistant contact cement
glue it all together
trim the excess
cut through the light holes etc in a cross pattern and glue the flaps to the back
spend three hours getting contact cement and bits of roof lining off your fingers
realize it would have been easier to get someone else to do it
put it all back together
I took mine out and a local trimmer did it for $100, much easier:D
Don't know how much it changed between 2nd and 3rd gen, but for a 3rd gen it was just easier to go to the wreckers and get a replacement... In a 3rd gen first remove everything and anything holding it on, then bend it and slide it out through the front drivers side door... It is ok to bend, its made from fiberglass.
As I said though, looks to be much different in a 3rd gen based on the above.

I think they may have changed the design in the newer cars?, the rooflining has a massive failure rate on the older magnas. I remember my mums old first gen had thumbtacks holding hers up:P

How is this relevant then? :bowrofl:
Well, my TH roof liner failed! :) Was thinking it might be similar?

Made from fiberglass, mate, look again, they are the same construction as a second gen only different shape
Rav, unles you are good with trimming you are best off getting one from the wrecker, make sure is a TS one as they have a better cliping system near the back window. If you want something different, get a second hand one and take it to a trimmer
If you want a fibreglass one, see Life as he has the only one in existance :bowrofl:

Howdy all;
For a second gen its easier IMO to get somewhere to do it for you. I had a go at it in mine, realised i was in over my head, got the $***$ deluxe and took it to a place in maitland who replaced it, (in black material) for just over $100.
By all means try it yourself but for a profesional result take it to a pro
My 2c anyway

so the general consensus here is to remove myself but then get a trimmer to retrim it?

I'd say go to a wreckers, find one in good condition, cost me $50 for a KJ headliner.
@Mal - I thought it was? :| Didn't seem like cardboard...

If you can mate, go grab a KS one, has the big light in the middle and the small map lights up front. They look much better.
If you want different to the Grey, get it done, if you do not mind the grey but just want a tidy one, grab one and pop it in

Obviously youve neva sneezed with a mouth full of coke:P lol
Yeah Rav, ya save about $50 by takin it out yurself (if you dont have a means to get it to a trimmer, undo it and let it hang till ya get there and then whip her out)
The wrecker ones can look good but usually do the same thing fairly quickly.:doubt:

You could use some of the stickiness from the NSW section to hold it up:P

damn not the answers i was looking for, i got quoted 180 for my lining to be done so wanted to do it myself
mines already been done in black, but wether or not it was done professionally is another question, if the guy got it done pro i'd be seriously questioning it, its **** and is hanging on my head

Dont replace it with a TS one. The holes in the back of the roof that allow for bigger clips (xmas tree clips) dont line up with any holes in the TR roof.
Correct me if I am wrong Mal. I used a TS lining as I saw this better clipping system at the back and yeah, fail. lol

Correct but you can easilly drill holes to take the clips, have done this before and is great as then you do not have a saggin back end (your roof lining that is)

Ah...Thats what I "wanted" to do. The sagging TR roof lining at the back was SO annoying.
Will have to add this to the "do on the weekend" list one day!

I reckon you'd have poor chances of finding a good condition roof lining at a wreckers, they might look good but remember that the foam (the bit that deteriorates and causes the sag) is around 15years old now, so is about due to give up the ghost. Also hard to find a suitable material.
When I got mine retrimmed "professionally", there was only about $20 difference between me taking it out and them taking it out. The retrim was pretty good, but they didn't put the roof back in properly, and argued with my wife when she took it back to get it fixed. The rear light (wagon) wasn't even clipped into metal, and was so far out of alignment it couldn't reach the clips!
Was Moorooka Auto Trim, Rav, pretty cheap (think was $80 or so), I guess you have to weigh up the service against the product. My roof's now good, but I was none too happy with their attitude afterwards.

I did it myself.
I just pulled the lining out as stated above and glued some marine grade carpet to the cardboard looked mint.

There's dozens of roof linings in the clearance centre in Adelaide.
They told me they were second gens but they wont fit my TS, the holes at the back is different and the hole for the light is in the wrong place.
I dont know what model they fit and I dont think they do either as all they would tell me was second gen, maybe worth further investigation if you need one and you dont have a TS
They only asked for $20

Just for two cents sake- $100 at a retrimmer. Worth every cent to save the aggrivation of a stuff up...

Yeah thats the way to go, I just pulled my roof out, pulled the saggy carpet off, went around to some re-trimmers till I found what I liked, bought a piece of it, and used some glue, stuck it on and slapped my roof back in, good as new!
Total cost was about $30 and about 3 hours total effort time from pulling it out and glue time, and putting it back in

My local upholstery guy did it for me; dropped it off in the morning and picked it up in the afternoon, $180.
