View Full Version : Exhaust tip too long?

I bought an exhaust tip a few days ago to go on my lukey LR2779 muffler, but i have a feeling it is too long! It measures 20cm in length and when i measure 20cm from my muffler (with a ruler), the exhaust sticks out about 1"/1.5" from the rear of my car.
Is there anything i can do about this? I was wondering if it were possible to shorten the exhaust tip, but as the tip opening is smaller than the 'tubey bit', i think if i shorten it, it will go from a 2.5" opening to a 3" opening and that might cause problems when welding onto a 2.5" outlet from the muffler.
Here is a pic so you can see what im talking about.

As you can see the opening is only 2.5", but there is a bulge where it turns to 3".

Its just a $50 tip from supercheap (Only place so far that i have found dual tips.... ) and sorry the pic is blurry- I took it with my phone.....

How long are your tips? (those people with a LR2779)

Take it to an exhaust shop and ask them to shorten it by 1.5"

Will take them 2minutes.

Eh... I had a 3" tip welded onto my LR2779, we just placed the tip against the muffler and welded to the muffler itself with the hole in the middle.

Well im getting it put on next weekend at carline. So do you think i can just tell him to shorten it when he sticks it on? I wonder how much he might charge for that?? I didnt get a quote for how much it would cost to have it welded on either as the main reason was to get a resonator put on. Hope the guy doesnt make up some insane price once he has installed it....

I am going to be really disappoined if it sticks out too far when its installed!!! :(

Anyway, thanks guys!
I think the zorst tip will look great on my car! :D

If he's a reputable place he shouldn't charge too much to put the tip on given your getting other work done as well.
Also if he's good at his job the tip should not stick out, it should look neat.
I think there may even be some laws around how much the tip can stick out, but he should know this.
Good luck, hope it works out well.

How is that funny? It looks like a normal exhaust tip.

i dunno, pretty sure thats the way its done anyways
i know thats the same way mines put on
they chop off the one that already on the muffler (if there is one) then weld up the new one over the top with the hole in the middle
looks like stock too ;)

I thought you meant the stock 2.5" pipe was left on, and the tip was just welded over it basically

I recently installed a lukey AL4-5597, I went to carline as I was also interested in using that same tip. He said they charge about $10 to put a tip on, sometimes a little more if cutting is involved. In your situation they will probably cut a little bit off the end of the muffler, just enough so that the tip sits neat and flush just under the bumper. I doubt it would be any more than $20. Report back with some pics and prices, I am very interested.

I have pretty much the same problem, bought dual dumpies and they were going to stick out about 10cm further because the bracket thing is in the way. Went back to the store and all of the tips were going to be too long. I considered removing and re-welding the bracket back further but even then the pipe doesn't straighten out until where the bracket currently is.
Any suggestions? Prefer to DIY rather than take it to an exhaust shop..

Pic to describe better..

J-Flo I had the same problem. If you are set on dualies, dump or straight you will need to cut some of the existing pipe and then weld the dual tip on. If you dont have the tools you will need to get someone most likely an exhaust shop to fit them for you. But as I said above it relativley cheap for them to do it. If you want a cheap option Supercheap sell a single tip for $20 that will just slide on (it got a punch in it so it keeps tight), it doesn't rattle and looks much neater. I will post up a pic 2moro.

Yes all is true, i knew i had to cut and weld but i can't cut back far enough because the bracket and the bend in the pipe is in the way. If i cut it back as far as i can the tip would still stick out about 10-15cm from the back bumper.

Well I am booked in at 'carline' in midland, only because the guy there said he would stick on a reso for just the price of the reso and said he wouldnt charge me for labour. -Which i thought was pretty decent. (Which is the main reason I am going to the exhaust shop..)
But looks like i wont be getting my tips done this weekend as i havent managed to remove my tow bar. rggg

Does anybody know where i could get a tow bar removed? I was planning on getting done by a mechanic at my next service (Which is due now anyway), but my dude was all booked this week. rgggg

J-Flo post a pic of your tip, 35 cm long seems really long for a tip. Unless you can cut the back end off your tip, you may need to find something different. Super**** have plenty that will fit and im pretty sure their not that long either (although not dump style). Mine is only 10 -15 cm in total, that one of rory's wouldnt be much longer either.

I'm pretty sure i originally bought the same tip as rory, blue diamond brand? HERE (http://www.bestmufflers.com/bshop/product_info.php?cPath=374_380&products_id=663&osCsid=94c049912aee90078b69bf9049f52a2a) it is.
It says it's 20cm there, so my memory of the bracket/pipe bend must have been wrong. it definately sticks out way too far if welded in front of the bracket.

I have now exchanged it for a single stainless tip that would fit, looks **** as though, i haven't fitted it yet. Would be ecstatic to exchange again for the dualies if i can.
