I'm doing my rocker cover gaskets and plugs at the moment.
But when I removed the upper manifold, I noticed oil coating the sides of the inlet runners. Is this normal or is there another problem?

nah its usually black on older cars. its from the pcv, and the same reason you have to clean your TB:D

Thats normal its just from the balancing pipe that connects into the front of the TB, its to lube the butterfly and upper cyl areas.

cleaning that off and using a properly installed catch can will get rid of it. though you will have to soak that in petrol to get it super clean. Its not really an issue unless its gunking op things, which by that time is when you are looking for a new motor

Well, rocker cover gaskets are done and heres hoping it doesn't leak.(Got a spare if it does) Rear gasket was the worst. Degreased the engine bay then went for a drive to check it all and all seems well, but when the car is idleling, the thermos would turn on as normal but 2-3 sec after they shut down they start up again, this is continuous, hope this is normal.
Also now have platinum plugs all round.

Next up, timing belt, and not by me.
