So I recently got a 6.5' woffer and tweeter package that I plan on putting in the doors/dash, but will I also need a midrange speaker or will the woofer/tweeter combo go fine? (it is a fusion package)
Also, if I do need mid range, can anybody suggest something that will fit into the dash holes (shallow) nicely?

The woofer in the split system is a mid range. Easy :D

Would I get better results tuning it just for base and using a mid range speaker, or is it not worth it?

6.5" woofer = Midbass speaker!!
If you want real bass, buy a sub...

Have a sub already, don't want epic ammounts doof doof though.
Is this a fusion 3-way package?
If so, you do need to mount the mid-range, as the crossover will split the frequencies between all 3 speakers, leaving on out will leave you with a massive mid-range gap.
The other option is to install the mid-bass/range (6.5) plus the tweeters, and custom make some 2-way crossovers from Jay-car hobby range.
Otherwise, just leave it as a 2-way setup (if thats the fusion package).

The Mitsubishi Clearance Centre in Adelaide had "Infinity" dash-pod speakers, as fitted to higher-spec export models.
They are about a 3" speaker, fits precisely in those round circles in the top of the dash. The Infinity speakers look to be much bigger magnets etc than the "standard" speakers in my car (KJ ei). They seem to have crossovers (capacitors or whatever) mounted near the spkr cage/magnet, so should be an easy install.
I have a few sets on-order from Caine (n SA). These were going for $5- per spkr, I plan to upgrade what is in the KJ, and add these into the TJ Sports and TJ Exec.
The standard ones in my KJ seem to sound OK, but for $10/pr I won't be crying too much if the Infinity ones don't sound heaps better.
I imagine Caine still has these available. I plan to drive to Adelaide in a couple of weeks (finally) to pick these up along with all my other goodies. You won't get a better bang-for-buck, integrated, easy to fit solution.
BTW, the existing spkers or vinyl circles should just prise out with a slender screwdriver or blade - there are clips involved, but mine seemed to be more like just sitting there - firm fit.
