Hi people. Thinking of getting a stereo system from the clearance place. not 100% happy with the after market Sony and am thinking go back to the stock if I can get a good version.

But - what models existed? I don't want to stuff Caine around saying "what models are there, can they do Aux in, or MP3?". Is someone able to point me towards a list of what they were and their feature set?

Ideally - need to make the call by Thursday afternoon so they can be collected this weekend.

It'll depend more on what Caine has in-stock more than what was available in the Mitsi range. When I spoke with him before Xmas, he had:
- Export spec "Infinity" single-cd HU and Amp. No MP3, some radio issues of compatibility.
- Single CD HU, MP3 capable, no Aux-In socket. Was $45 at the time
- 4-CD and 6-CD single-DIN Changers, not MP3 Capable. Think also $45 at the time for 6-CD unit.
- Cassette HU, has an Aux-In Socket. Was $25- at the time.

My intitial TJ was a '01 Exec - had single-CD HU with Aux-In, no MP3. Later got a '02 TJ Sports - which had diff single-CD HU, without an Aux-In socket. This unit was no-go for CD's - so I eBay'd the same unit as the Exec to get the Aux In socket for IPod. Found it hard to believe that a newer, more 'up-spec' model LOST the Aux-In feature.

Caine may have more or better units have come in by now. Only one way to find out, unless a SA member has knowledge from recent visit.

I'm a big fan of the "OEM look" with audio stuff, but features and performance of even the cheapest after-market units outstrips the years-old original models - or so I reckon. Thing is, most aftermarket stuff pokes out of the dash rather than fitting flush, looks a bit flashy and I just get the impression is "tacked-on" (not to say tacky).

Mind you, lots of members spend waaaay more than I on upscale units, of which I've seen some look pretty shmick in forum threads - but at a cost beyond my concept of "value". But we've all got opinions, aye?

Same here, my Series 1 VR-X stock headunit could do burnt CDs (no mp3 CDs) and had an Aux In.

I think if its mounted properly, it makes more sense to just go buy a new HU. My aftermarket HU obviously bulges out, but I re-drilled the mounting holes so that the plastic surround sits flush with the rest of the dash. Obviously doesn't look OEM, but it looks pretty clean and tidy - it has less of a tacked-on look imo.

I realise you're after a stock head unit but if you change your mind Ive got a decent entry level Clarion hu with mp3 compatibility for sale if youre interested.

Caine has nothing in stock that takes Aux In at present. Although he did say there may be some electric antennas in the next shipment (fingers crossed).

Nemesis - thanks, might come chat to you next month when I get a wee bit more financial.

Tony, you can pick up a good atfer market head unit with MP3 & AUX In for under $200, something like THIS (http://www.ryda.com.au/JVC-KD-G396-Car-CD-MP3-Tuner-p/kdg396.htm) with MP3/AUX In, or even like THIS (http://www.ryda.com.au/JVC-KD-G646-Car-CD-MP3-USB-Tuner-p/kdg646.htm) that has USB as well.
