Recently took a trip to queensland from melbourne and about 250km from home the auto box decides it won't go into gear any more. Tried 1st,2nd,drive, reverse all gone. Got the car back home now and sounds like will need a new box or a reco. car is a 2000 TJ with 230k on it.
ideas on wat to do? do i replace the box or go 4 a new car?

Replacing the box wont cost much if you have a decent mech or know how to do it yourself, you should be able to pick up a spare auto box for under $700.

What do you mean by gone? Does the engine switch off as soon as you select a gear? If so, then its not the box but the TCU/ECU. That is, its an electronics problem.

Had same issue the other day in a TW AWD it ended up being the reverse light fuse had blown as a result of towing a dodgey trailer.

engine keeps running. everything appears as thu it is in gear but the car doesen't move.
mech has had a look and seems to think the box is shot as well.
can do abit of mech work myself but don't really have the tools to drop a tranny.

Just replace it with a low km 2nd hand box. Just replaced mine but I only managed 110K out of it.
good Quality Box $700-900
Install $300
Mits SPIII ATF $75

Likely to be a fairly common failure with this Auto transmission - search forums for "wave spring" and see what comes up - am fairly sure I've described here before and someone linked to a US article explaining the problem with many good pics.
A "wave spring" in low-reverse clutch-pack breaks - the broken piece is flushed through the box until it jams the rotor of the transmission oil-pump. The rotor shatters, sending bits through the box. It's a box-out, complete pull-down looking for metal shards job - cost me $2200- to recondition my box (which I wanted to do, it was 57K kms, so thought mine would be better than an exchange or 2nd-hand box).
My auto-transmission place suspected immediately what was wrong, and were correct. they gave me the stuffed parts of the oil pump. Mitsubishi revised the part TWICE after my car was built - they must have realised they had a problem with the wave-spring. Shame for us all they did not conduct a recall.

QUESTION: Why is it called a "wave spring"?
ANSWER: When it breaks, you can wave bye-bye to your gearbox, and you have to spring for a lotta dosh!

I assume you have a 3.5?
If you have the 3.0 I have a really good trans here you can have cheap, for the next few days while the car is still together you are also welcome to pop over and take it for a drive to feel the trans, is a very smooth trans and has recently been flushed

Mate, I know the 3.0 manual can be made to fit up to a 3.5 I have a 3.0 auto box here that is silky smooth. Can anyone advise if this will bolt up?
If so, you can have this one fairly cheap as it will just be in my way
The higher stall might be bit of a bonus....the converters are interchangeable.

car's back on the road as of friday. 3lt box was a direct swap. slightly different ratios which makes
a small difference with change points but seems to be ok.
