As some of you may know (read my other threads) i have recently changed mechanics as i thought my one at the time was verrrry unorganized.
So today i got my timing belt and the 'magna shudder/rattle' done by my new mechanic, when i picked it up he asked me who did my water pump (was my old mechanic), because the timing belt was on BACKWARDS and the crank angle sensor leads were the wrong way and just wrapped around a belt cover and constantly rubbing/putting pressure on the belt!
And the rocker cover was miss-aligned which i'm guessing could have been the cause of an oil leak i've had.
Problems are now fixed and my car is running A LOT better than it has been, put a smile on my face :)

The interesting thing is these mechanics are brother-in-laws lol!

Anyone else had problems like this with mechanics?

Aah, mechanics, Unfortunately a lot of them think that they are gods gift to engineering and that no one other than just possibly another mechanic could know anything about cars. I'm a fitter and over the years have worked on a lot of very expensive machinery but I've had plenty of occasions when I've taken cars in for warranty work, described the problem and what I thought might be causing it, only to be treated like I was a total d***head. Different story when it turns out I was right.
Funny how a lot of good engine builders are fitters rather than mechanics.

bit like my commodore.. took it to my local Holden Dealer when it had a knock in the front LHS shock tower.. They said nothig was wring with it after pulling it out and inspecting it.. They put the bushes and plates back in upside down..

This was picked up by pedders after having a $14 check done because the knock still existed.. back to Holden Dealer with the report I went - they were quite embarrassed, and removed and re-fitted a brand new shock tower under warranty..

I assumed that they would have learnt from the first time and naturally thought everything was in the right way.. When I had it lowered by a reputable steering specialist, they found that most things were put back in upside down AGAIN and the shock tower itself had worked its way quite loose in the period that i had been driving it..

Car will never go back to the mechanics at the dealer again.. Luckily now I have found a reliable, independant mechanic that services my car in return for me detailing his car.. :)

i only do my own repairs, i just dont trust anyone else to do it right, im an exterior plasterer but i do have a knack for mechanics. i always follow the workshop manual and i never go wrong. ive done head gaskets, bottom ends and the rest. as long as your thourough i think you can do the best job as its your car and the attention to detail is much higher, well for me thats how it is. i used to use mechanics then took a leap of faith and repaired a blown head gasket on my isuzu trooper. it had blown between third and fourth cylinder, so i was lucky no oil cotamination. the only thing i couldnt do was plane the head which was fifty bucks and get a small crack tig welded, again fifty bucks. iwas quoted from 1200 to 2000 bucks at various places. i only bought it for 200 bucks so that was no go!! the job cost me 280 bucks including oil/coolant ,I ended up swapping it for my diamante, from ironicly an aussie guy who had been here a few years. i had restored it to mint condition. anyway it went well and is still running today, the guy tows his boats, and i love my mitsi!! if i had given up i would have never got my car. :D

Indeed very funny.... but very true!!

I do all of the serious work on my cars....
But I hate changing oils... besides getting difficult to dispose of, I ALWAYS make the most God awful mess on the garage floor... dunno... just me....

I'm an engineer by trade and hate working on cars... having said that I've done everything on cars from overhauling auto and manual gearboxes.. rebuilt and shimmed diffs, suspension work of all kinds, rebuild engines even overhauled a couple of turbos.... porting and polishing rates as a crappy job too...never built a diesel engine though....
My mitso's have been great (Touch wood) the one prob I had with my VR-X was a bung vaccuum solenoid valve that's part of the traction control and just replaced that..

Like was mentioned earlier... as long as you follow the workshop manual... and give yourself enough time (and beers) 99% of people should be ok!

Mitso does my oils and sign the books that's it......Ewwww sounds lazy!!!
