ok guys i have had the good fortune to find a converion from a wreck very cheap ($250) though before i go ahead with this i need to know a few things .


1. can i use my auto gear box mounts ?

2. will i need a new sprigit bearing being from a auto to manual ?

3. what wires do i need to join in the inhibitor ?

4. is there anything i should know ?

this conversion will start in a few months though i plan to take pics step be step

Just done mine and finished it today

I cheated and used the ECU harness from the Manual car the box came from and is all plug and play that way. No wires to bridge etc.

Make sure that the box you have is off the same engine you have ie 3.0 or 3.5. If you put a 3.0 box on a 3.5 you will still need the 3.5 dog shaft on the RH drive shaft.

Yep -- you will need a new spriggit bearing. Get the blue one, not the red one. And make sure you get the right grease with it. it is green in colour.

gearshift, cables, brackets.

clutch pedal

Better get the manual mounts with the box just in case.

Not a job I would do myself - need an expert like Mal to do it really.

so many threads on this topic. do a search and all the info you need is there.

I have no idea what a sprigot (spigot??) bearing is. if it's a thrust bearing, yes you will need it, as the auto 'box doesn't use one.

the actual conversion is fairly straight forward with all the info on the forums. just make sure you have the right tools for the job.

Got a good flux capacitor recommendation for him aswell Max? :roll:

Also, Get a new spiggot bearing to be on the safe side.

A useful post, just for a change.

Spigot bearing = a bearing at the centre of the flywheel, that supports the end of the input shaft of the gearbox. Rearwheel drives such as the Mitsu Sigmas had them, but I don't think the Magna has one.

TR-TS-KR-KS manual, page 21-2-2

Picture shows that the input shaft doesn't extend into the end of the crankshaft, and there IS NO SPIGOT BEARING.

I wasn't aware that you have done a conversion - I'm doing a clutch replacement on a 2.6 but didn't look in the flywheel for a spigot bearing, so I checked the manual for my own education! No insult to your superior experience was intended. So Chill, OK?

i have all this thank you madmax:) the wreck is too far away to get more parts of it, i have the gear shift and brackets cables , peddles , flywheel clutch aand presure plate the thrus bearing is on the box , starter motor all the hydrolics except the pipe going from the rezy to the slave though thats no trouble, i will buy a new clutch plate and cv jionts and from the sound of it i will need gearbox mounts as from what i have read the autos are not the same....

i will do this conversion myself it is straight forward just involves time, maybe a solid weekend once im comfortable that i have everything ive converted a n/s motor but never a e/w

I've been told the manual vs auto mounts are just a tad softer or harder. Not sure if this is right, when I converted my TR to manual the GB mount from auto to manual looked IDENTICAL. so you know probably just save yourself money and keep the auto one..

The 3rd gen ones are completely different. mounts are in a diffrent location.

The Spiggot Bearing was used on most RWD set ups, it is a small bearing in the end of the crank shaft that supports the inpit shaft due to the length of the of the input shaft in a notrh - south engine

Most FWD cars have extremely short input shafts and generally do not use spiggot bearings. Magna's are the same

In relation to the mounts, the front and rear mounts are fine to use, they do not support the engine more than they stop roll of the engine. The end tans mount is very different and needs to be replaced with the manual mount

You will also need to make the hole in the fire wall for the clutch master cyl, this is not hard to do, inside the car you will actually see where this needs to go as the first skin of the wall has the cut out there already. If you look in members machines my car is there and you will see an example of how to cut this out when I fitted my ABS, similar idea but on a smaller scale. One tip, get a new drill bit for doing rivets as these are cheap, short for access and very sharp.

When you change your gear shifter, there is usually a tab you need to remove on the console mount, just remove the 10mm bolt and remove the clip. ALso if you have floor vents for the rear seats, the LH one will get in the way of your shifter cables, I would mod it and then use cloth tape to cover the small hole there.

That is about all I can think of, personally I would take out your existing engine as is easier. The front to rear member comes out then you can angle the motor box down and will then allow the engine to lift out without fowling on anything.
