Hey guys,

I got my hands on a set of rims that take 235/45/R17 tyres for my 96 TE. I called/emailed a few places a got some quotes.
I have narrowed it down to two tyres but i'm not sure which ones to actually get.

Maxxis Mav1 - $149.00 (each - includes fitting and balance)
Goodyear Regatta - $179.00 (each - includes fitting and balance)

Anyone got some tips/opinions? (Currently I have ****ty Bob Jane All-rounders on my stock rims)

Thanks, Lynx

Goodyear Regatta (http://www.goodyear.com.au/TyreDetailAction.do?website=GYR&websegmentcode=PASSENGER&mtpcode=00525&from=nPerPage) 235/45r17 94V
Maxxis MA-V1 (http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-Truck/High-Performance/MA-V1.aspx) 235/45r17 93V

check your tyre placard (drivers side B pillar) and see if these two tyres meet your load rating. I think most 3rd gens are either 95 or 94.

in real world circumstances, 94 or 93 will be sufficient, however it's not technically legal to run tyres with a lower load rating than is defined on the tyre placard.

I've found (esp. with tyres) that you get what you pay for. cheap tyres are usually deficient in at least one of the following areas: grip, noise, durability.

they're not really cheap if you have to replace them twice as often as a tyre that costs $100 more.

cheers,

He said he has a 96 TE which means a minimum of 95. 235/50R17 tyres are available, however, there's only a few brands in that size and they are expensive. OP, have you considered 225/50R17 XL or 225/55R17 tyres? How wide are the wheels?

Hmm well I'm not exactly sure i'll measure them when I get home from work.

-------------

I'm just looking at some online tyre size calculators, anyone know what size the tyres that go on the stock 15" rims are? (car is sort of in the car park)

Will do.

First off, sorry to Shinraa, I meant to quote Wookie. Anyway, the width and diameter should be stamped on th inside of the wheel (inside face of the spokes) including the offset. It should be something like 17x8JJ 40ET where 17 is the diameter in inches and 8 is the width in inches (JJ is the design or something like that and 40ET is 40mm positive offset.

Alright sweet, I'll have a look when I head home in 45 mins or so.

Haha on another note ... I feel so insignificant compared to you guys with your awesome paint jobbed, lowered, undamaged magnas :(
My magna is the worst colour .... Kashmeiere Beige and it's got little dings all over it :( but i'm slowly fixing it up :P

If it makes you feel better, I've got a 2 metre length of keying on my right side going from the rear door to the bumper in a wavy form.

:stoopid: i find these have more grip thatn the Grid II's or III's especially in the wet. A little noisier than I hoped for but wear ok if rotated regularly....which reminds me.......

Yeah traction in the wet is a good idea as I found out ..... Kinda bent the **** out of my lower support arm, bent my rim as well (somehow the tyre was fine), but was cheap to fix so meh.

Ouch :S

Yeah I've got plenty of scratches :P

Hmm I spose really should also fix my oil leak ....

Woot, only thing is I wanna make sure they're legal so I need to check my load rating.

Yours would be 95 as with most magnas/verads except for the VRX/Sports and ralliart which are 94. People running tyres with lower rating run the risk of voiding their insurance in an accident.

Hmm, yeah I don't want to void that so my options are to spend more $$$ or get a different size?

Your best bet is to stick with 235/45R17 as it is the closest match to stock rolling diameter. You may have to hunt around (ask tyre centres) for 235/45R17 XL tyres. XL stamp means extra loading. These have something like a 97 load rating. They would be a little bit more expensive then you non-XL ones.

Hmmm I can't say I have seen any XL tyres, this could be fun.

MAXXIS makes the MA-Z1 Victra in 235/45R17 in 97W and 97Y. Have a look around a few of the manufacturers websites. Give Bob Jane a call and ask how much they'll slug you for a Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra.

Here (http://www.tyres4u.com.au/t4utyreselector/passenger_Vehicle-Ford%20-%20Tickford%20Special%20Vehicles_Year-1999_Model-AU%20Tickford%20TE%2050%20Falcon%20Sedan%205.0L%20 V8_SKey-235%2045%2017_Gross-93%20Z_slist.aspx) is a page showing tyres for a falcon. Note the XL labelling for some of them.

crazy ass grip from the MA-V1's! ive done a few brake tests with them in cars with and without ABS.. in the pouring rain, i planted the brake pedal, and ABS didnt even engage :D i'd recommend them to anyone!

however they seem to have a short life compared to some tyres.. im replacing mine after around 40,000km as soon as the little $900 govt grant comes through :)

Got Maxxis MA-V1 tyres on my car as well. Like others have said it's an awesome tyre. Good grip, low noise and great wear rate for a sporty tyre. I've got about 35,000km on them and i reckon they should go to 50,000km easy.

If you can't engage ABS in the rain on a full belt stop, then you're either not mashing the brake hard enough, or, your ABS is rooted.

stopped fricken quickly to the point where there was no point in pushing harder.. would have went from 80-0 in a bit more than a house front thinking back to when i did it.. more than quickly enough to satisfy my for braking performance.

hey mate i got maxxis MAZ-1's on my car a couple of years ago and didnt know what to expect but they have been fine. Fantastic value for money with what they do. Didnt really find may times they let me down. I liked them so much that i replaced them the other day with the same ting. I got a bit over 35000km's out of the first ones which i dont think is too bad for soft 19's
