Hi, a While back Blake was talking about adding a Tranny Cooler into his car, well, when i got my tranny serviced, I happened to ask how much they were and they aren't all that expensive. $150 I got a 24 rail cooler, install is pretty easy, but they did it for me while the car was up there, much quicker. Well, what's the difference you ask? hmm for a peace of mind maybe, haha... but for people who know they push their AUTO box hard for long periods, I've been told that the cooler is able to keep your Tranny fluid much more cooler than without it.

Before the Tranny cooler is installed, the standard tranny fluid runs into the bottom of the radiator, sharing the cooling effects of the radiator with the coolant, now it is seperate, so one may think it may even benefit the radiator too.

I've got my tranny cooler sitting at RPW waiting to be installed, if only i could keep a car long enough to have it insalled :P

But i belive when it comes to Auto's they are a worthy investment. They look cool too :D

WHITEDEVIL: is there any diference in gear shifting after fitting the radiator?

The radiator doesn't have a direct effect over the shifts, but it plays a major part in the health of your tranny. The new fluid was Definately noticable! Shifts are more solid whereas it used to be a bit flarey.

Though knowing that the tranny fluid is kept at a lower temp, you are better assured that the tranny won't overheat as easily, which is a problem with Autos.

But in the end, getting this small mod is mostly for a peace of mind more than anything.

hope this helps.

I know it doesn't have a direct effect on shifting but if I drive hard for 10-15 minutes the shift feeling will change - it is like it slips between the gears and the shift is not so smooth - so I thought this is happening because of the oil becoming much thinner/hot.

If I fit the radiator do you think it will shift smoothly all the time?

And there is a problem with the tranny oil ........ I've tried to change the Mitsubishi factory fill but it seems that you can't replace this one as it has it's own specifications and Mitsubishi does not recommend another brand.

Tnx

Oh , I see what you mean, before I got my tranny serviced, my shifts are pretty flarey, it has changed a lot now. I think we pushed our cars a fair bit yesterday at our curise, and it tranny had no problems. so I guess the tranny cooler does do a fair bit.

as i said before, it's a small price to pay for a peace of mind. :D

how did they attached it to the engine cooler? any pics?

the stock tranny shares the radiator for cooling, all we did was unplug from the radiator and using the standard high temp oil tubes to connect it up to the external cooler unit. that was it. it is held in place via screws , but it's not heavy, cable ties can hold it in place without a problem.

What does it screw into, and where abouts does the cooler sit? Are the existing holes on the radiator plugged up (and if so, with what)? I'd like to be able to do this myself.

the external cooler was screwed onto the bottom rail that the radiator shares, we had to drill a couple of holes to screw it it in place. Nothing too hard.

I left the Radiator inlet and outlet holes unplugged, although, thinking about it, i probably should plug it up else I'll get a lot of dead insects in there later, but it's not like i'm going to use it anyway, so i suppose i don't care.

I also thought about connecting it back up to the radiator in series with the external unit, then i've got even more cooling effect, at a cost of possible heat transfer from the coolant to or from the tranny fluid. :doubt:   I don't know. It's not hard to do it yourself. so I think you should give it a try.

Have fun.

What size??? Where are you at ?
I have a 24 rail one, takes up about 2/3s of half side of the radiator. the cooler cost $180, install was bundled with the service. my complete tranny flush + service + cooler cost me $380.

Sounds like an enourmos cooler there WhiteDevil, It should serve you well.

Being so large i wouldn't hook up your existing cooler to run with your aftermarket one as you don't want to cool it too much.

Ummm, I'm not exactly sure what size it is. The one they recommended looked roughly 10 inches by 12 inches. They were saying they come with rails to suit commys and falcons and would need to adapt the bracket plus add custom hoses. The stock hoses are 8mm, and they require 5/16" - so need to adapt. I'm fully mechanically minded ... physics, chemistry, psychology, theology and history yes, but mechanics no. I saw a kit in repco for $180 and considered mounting it myself, but don't want to void my dealers mechanical protection plan by doing something stupid.

It's really not that hard to mount, the guys at the diff shop said most people just run a few cable ties per side through the condenser and it holds in place.

ok ill be getting one then, i notice how solid the shifts feel when its cold compared to the flarey ones after a mild hammer.

Yeah most just attach with cable ties through the condenser...

Hmmmm not entirely comfortable with cable ties, I'm sticking with the bolt on option. Considering some of the roads I drive, I don't like the idea of anything being zip tied on. Car is for business as well as pleasure - this trip covers Nullabour, Lake Eyre, Wudina, Gawler Ranges, William Creek. Yep all in my trusty (now B+S) Magna.

For the record guy's RPW specials for teh months of April / May are quick shifters for manuel vehicles and auto trans coolers for the auto people.

Whilst I cannot give out specific pricing on the forums lets just say that the trans coolers we will be supply will be under $120.00 AUD$ for the kit with hosing included. :D

This is teh same as the one we woul dbe fitting to Blakes car and is the perfect size not too big or small.

The kit Dave got me is a very spunky looking kit and not to hard on the wallet :D

Less then $120 sounds pretty good, has anyone got a tech article, or know of one, for fitting an after market tranny cooler? I had a look under my bonnet to see what would need to be done, but I can't see much with out taking the actual bumper off  , anyway, if anyone has a tech article or can quickly explain how to do it just to give me an idea of what needs to be done that would be very helpful.

Cheers.
