View Full Version : KS Verada - Brake Shudder - Hub Bearing Replacement?

We have been chasing a shudder under brakes in the front end of the KS. Replaced rotors, pads and had the rotors machined. Everyone tells us we have a brake problem but when they finish their work the shudder is still there.

Latest diagnosis is that front hiub bearing has too much end float

Has anyone had this problem before?Does it sound reasonable?
Any other possibilities?

Spoke to the local dealer and they do not carry the bearings for KS with ABS and they don't want to know about us - more interested in an upsell of plennum chamber clean

Appreciate your help and suggestions of anyone in Brisbane (southside) who might be able to fix / accurately diagnose the problem. My wife has had this car since new and there is no way she will ever part with it (even had to sell my KH Xi and keep the KS)

Thanks

i suggest steering clear of dealers. With older Verada's/Magna's they tend to not care much. Go to a front-end specialist, someone who can have a proper look at the suspension/drive components.

I have the same shudder too.......

With regard to bearing replacement, everyone I have spoken to has said it is expensive for parts and for labour also.

Apparently it needs a special tool and special bearings because of FWD and ABS

check tie rod ends, wheel balance, and alignment. Could also be a castor issue. To check youe bearing, jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground, put one hand at 12 and the other a 6 and rock the wheel back and forth. If there is excessive movement, then i would suggest they are stuffed. Cheap replacement could be buying a second hand set of steering knuckles from a wrecker.

Fulcrum told me I had a brake problem. Asked them how I still had a brake problem if

1 had brakes machined and still had shudder
2 replaced rotors and pads and still had shudder
3 had steering checked out and there wad no problems
4 had brakes checked, machined and still had shudder

Got blank stares and looks as if I was a dip stick - (I'm nearly 60 and been working on race and rally cars since I was 16)

Going to get the hub bearings replaced on Monday

is it possible theres a problem with the ABS?? just a guess. also i have heard the rotors on these cars are prone to warping if wheel nuts are over torqued. did they use a rattle gun on your car after doing the work?? if so they may have warped your new discs, its a long shot but does happen. anyway, just my brainstorming!

Yeah, I've used a torque wrench on my nuts (wheel nuts that is) ever since I got my first car that didn't have drum brakes on the front. Never had any discs machined, never came across warped discs. A co-incidence?

Mind you, if you have sloppy ball joints or tie rod end play, and you brake hard at speed, all hell breaks loose when the ABS activates.

Hub bearing replaced problem solved

Highly recommend ABS in Deshon St Wooloongabba.

They got it right - the dealers, franchised brake places and suspension gurus all got it wrong

Plus they did log book 220,000 km service for under half the dealer charge

Yes bearing is expensive

Back to my LPG powered Falcon tomorrow - need to get some parts from K-Mart

So you are telling me that after having had rotors machined they still replaced them??? What tools these people are

A simple check would have been a run out check and if there was no run out then look elsewhere such as front bearings

Problem now days is people do not think of bearings due to them being sealed and not serviceable like they were in the old days with RWD cars.
