I have a TP wagon, which was firstly a family car-kids and wife have out grown it, however I love it as a commuter and great car in the bush collecting firewood. Especially since I had the head reconditioned and replaced the cracked manifold with extractors.
I'm too far from Melb to enjoy club etc. I'm also into old italian sports bikes and upkeep of cars and bikes are painfully enjoyable- sometimes. Currently rewiring the lighting on a Guzzi Le Mans.
Keep up the posts, they make interesting reading.

I still have my TP Wagon and TP Sedan but will have to get rid of one shortly. It is too expensive trying to maintain two cars, especially with the rego. and insurance costs.

I've wanted to paint my interior white for aages but Am scared it will get dirty quickly. Now ive seen it i want to do it even more, looks good.
questions...
-Did the white interior get dirty easily?
-Is there a special paint you need to use?

Ya I got some looks alright, mainly laffed at coz it was a magna but got used it :doubt: Its like having a gf that no one likes ya don't get rid of her, its all about what you like.
The white interior did get a little dirty especially if I had greasy hands but I didnt have to clean it often, just didn't touch it or used clothes when working under the hood. The paint I used was enamel paint you get from bunnings, came in small tins and paint brushed a couple coates on then a layer of clear spraypaint to protect it. For the trim inserts I just taped it all up and used matt-black spraypaint. It's far from a professional job but with lots of masking tape it worked :)
The only problem with enamel paint it was very shiny and therefore a bit glarey so I couldn't forget the sunnies
In hindsight I shoulda used a more matt white vinyl paint, but then again that'll involve taking off the dash to get a good finish. It depends how much effort and time you want to put into it mate. Feel free if ya have any more Q's
BTW: that's a beautiful elite ya got there, very nice :P

I reckon I'm in the same boat you were. I get so much **** about owning a magna but I love the car. Everythings running well on it so i dont see huge reason to change just yet.
Ok more qs then,
How'd ya get rid of the trolley strip on the side? Cos isnt it indented in the doors so when you pull it off it is hollow? Did you fill it up with car putty? Looks good like that.

Hi, My name is Wayne and I have just joined up. Not being very cash benefited at the moment , I was looking for a cheap car. I found in a wholesale yard, a 1990 GLX TP, manual gear box and some weird looking thing on top of the engine which I later found out is called a Carby. Anyhow, I think she is a bit of a rare find, perfect interior, pale yellow in colour(not faded, car is same colour as the colour inside the door when you open it), no rust and at the time I got it only original 159000 on the clock. Marked as hale damage from new but you have to look a second time to see it.... all for 1300 bucks. Really happy with the car so far, no problem motoring, starts and does everything a car should do. At work there is a guy who has done one of these right up and it looks pretty dam good. Big wheels, full body kit, suspension upgrade and bigger brakes... His car is efi and he has done the motor up and supercharged it. Haven't ridden in it yet but I am sure she would be rather rapid.... Anyhow, Hi all and it is good to see a few of us still touring around in these ex car of the year Magna's.
Cheers

Ah the trim delete was a fun job believe me, first I striped the black trim then lightly sanded the paint back in the crease (yeah its hollow once the trim comes off). After that followed about 6 tins of car filler, lots and lots of sanding for 2 weeks after work to get it smooth to the body. A basic undercoat then 3 layers of Polar White B (stock paint) from super cheap. Was a hell of a job but yes damn it looked good once it was done

Still have my TP 5 Speed, Carbie, Manual, Wagon. Original engine, done 307,000km. However, have built an electroliser hydrogen rate at approx 1 Litre per minute. This has made a huge difference to milage and the engine is very, very clean.

Still have two TP's (sound like an Indian here), an Elite Auto wagon and an Elante 5 spd Sedan. Both EFI on dual fuel. Thinking of selling the Elite now as we have no driver for it, but the Elante, my daughter won't let me get rid of that. It is her little sports car, she just loves the way it zips around.

I still have my TP sedan as a daily driver (executive, auto, carby). It is quite low mileage - probably about 100,000 km now but I've lost track due to swapping the speedo twice.
I also have a TP wagon (executive, auto, efi) that is now off the road due to front end crash damage. The damage is minor, basically only needs bumper and headlights and possibly bonnet. It has done about 290,000 km but engine and gearbox are good. I'm undecided about fixing it as I don't want to pour money into it and then find I can't get a blue slip. Also I've had several attempts at replacing the rear engine mount. I can undo the old one but can't get enough clearance to get it out.
I still have the 1990 Magna I bought new in 1991 from Killara Mitsubishi. It's a Riviera Blue TP Grand Tourer and has done about 167,000 kms.
I was just thinking a few weeks ago how the first generation Magnas seem to have just disappeared over the last few years. A thought prompted when I was driving down Dunmore Street in Wentworthville and there was another TP Magna (a dark red one, but not a Grand Tourer) coming the other way - the passenger in the other car became rather animated and pointed in my direction as we passed eachother.
Is it just that they have dropped so much in value that they are getting into the hands of people who just run cars into the ground and after a year or two of that treatment end up in a wreckers yard?

I reckon that's about spot on unfortunately. Super cheap cars to buy and just run until they run no more. They are pretty tough cars, so when they finally pack up the wreckers is the best option...
I still miss my TP Elite believe it or not! :P

Yeah, the 2nd gens are heading that way too -- it's not often you find one on the road in good nick... most have dings in practically every panel and are clearly not looked after.

hey all, I got me a 1990 TP executive sedan 3 years ago, saved it from being run dead, 3 yrs later its still not on the road, but its running like its brand new since i brought it home, getting impatient about getting it complete and on the road but on the other hand the more time its here and off the road, the more time i got to work on it. Few not so stock parts and accessories, such as stereo, lighting, inner door trims, steering wheel etc but majority of it is stock still.
No thanks to the previous owner who was driving it around on 3 pistons ( slaps forehead ) regardless he was supposedly a mechanic, but all good, cleaned it up, redone the head etc, purrs like a kitten ( or at least a mouse on steroids ). may only be a youngin' myself, but i think Magna's rock, not only have my TP, but also inherited my dad's TN.
Mine is still running, it's and 88 tm i think,
have taken it around Australia, up the middle and several other long road trips. as well as hitting a kangaroo doing about a 100, and it has been parked in mates sheds and farm yards several times and has started up every time, once was just about a year it was stored and not driven.
It's been a great car, plenty of storage, and has gone through everything, a few creek crossings, some 4wd only tracks, and everyday driving as well.

Hi all, new member here. I recently gained what i believe to be a TP Elite. 2.6 EFI Auto. From the start ive had to replace the dizzy, coil, rear tyre and battery. its on gas and wont run on petrol. i had to also to plugs and leads recently but having said that i still love this car. i sprayed the top half black with $3 spray cans and haven't looked back. its smooth, comfortable and a joy to drive. if anyone has any parts such as extractors, rims, interior, exterior please let me know. cheers :)

There are three other first generation Magnas I've seen locally, so they're not completely extinct yet. Aside from my TP Grand Tourer, I saw a very nice looking beige TN station wagon this morning parked at Wentworthville (I haven't seen it before though, so maybe it's not a local car), a maroon and silver TN Elite and a well kept white TP station wagon.
They are getting a bit thin on the ground though.
