View Full Version : ABS Issues

I am still having problems with my ABS, since painting my calipers a few months ago.

Originally I had to deactivate the system completely by removing the fuse as for some reason one of the sensors was buggered and ABS was activating EVERY TIME I USED THE BRAKES. Figured out it was the LH front sensor and swapped it no worries.

So now, the system is tripping (light coming on dash and deactivating ABS - wheel will then lock up under heavy braking) when I hit about 80 kays. I am thinking one of the sensors is somehow tripping out and giving the ABS controller a fault of some sort.

Yes, I DID remove the heat shields from around the hubs, its too much effort to replace them at the moment - although I don't think the issue is heat related, and here is why:
1. It seems to do it the same on super hot/super cold days, no matter what the engine temperature
2. I can drive around for 10km at 60km/hr, but as soon as I take it to about 80, it will trip

Anyone have any ideas on what I should try to troubleshoot it? My car is with the mechanic at the moment, and he said he doesn't know off the top of his head what it might be so I was hoping someone here might have an idea

As always, thanks in advance!

To be honest your best bet is to plug it in and get the fault code

The second gen ABS system is rather poor to be honest, it uses a nitrogen system with the second reservoir under the fl inner guard. Not many know but when that reservoir gets to the low mark the whole ABS unit needs to be replaced

I would say you have an issue with a sensor, may have damaged a wire or perhaps knocked a sensor too far away from the hub ring. Get the specs and check the distance these are first perhaps

Sure, well they are plugged in at the moment.... I am now used to seeing the light appear at 80km/hr each day.

TBH I havn't checked that ABS actually activates properly before the fault light comes on (not sure if that even matters)

So checking the fault code, that is just checking the ECU for fault codes right? I have the pdf manual I presume that has the correct procedure for testing for ECU fault codes?

I will also grab the other sensors off my other KS and swap them all over just to be sure

So....... In the shed at the moment..... anyone know what distance there should be between ABS sensors and the wheel hub?\

Thanks in advance

You REALLY need a gregorys and or workshop PDF to look at
/end useless posts

I have the workshop PDF and can't find it.......

Edit: also checked gregorys repair manual, it just says 'install ABS sensor' but not what distance

I would check the fault codes first if you can and if the manual doesn't have the distance then assuming the other sensors are ok I would check the other measurements and make it the same.
