Hi folks, mine are now shot and need doing asap. Before I chase parts I was wondering ... are ther gaskets around the plug holes as well? Are they a seperate item or do they come with the perimeter gasket? I'l be getting genuine gaskets and I was going to help things along with a bit of Permatex Blue sealant. Good idea?
Will there be other gaskets, say like the plenum chamber one?
Thanks

Most parts places sell the kits, they are a rocker cover gasket and plug tube kit, you need 2 kits to do both sides
You dont need any sealant around the gasket.

i was looking at getting this done too, might give it a go if it's not too hard.
got a quote from a mechanic, wanted about $260-$280, sounds a bit steep for me
says it's a bit fiddly getting the plenum off etc...
is it an easy DIY?
is there anything i can stuff up?

The search will be the best thing you can use to be honest
I and many others have done a step by stem
The manifold is very easy to get off, only becomes a little harder with traction control as one bolt is a bit hard to get to.
Rest is good, one tip, loosen your timing belt covers and pull them back a bit, helps to get the covers off and then back on

i recall seeing on here a step by step guide on how to remove the manifold (which bolts etc) with pics
think it was for a spark plug change DIY,
can't seem to located it..
can anyone direct me or link me?

are you talking about that mirage?
i did my tj and i was quoted the same. I ended up DIY and it cost me about 15 bucks + about 3hrs.
it just takes ages to get to the rocket cover under the manifold and remembering where everything fits back together.
otherwise its not that hard.

nope.. i mean the TJ 3.5 V6
i'm quite a hands on type of person, so i'm happy to get my hands dirty, just need the instructions to guide me along lol

I did mine about 2 weeks ago, took me around 3 hrs, just with the rear gasket it is harder to see if the gasket is on properly, if its not on right it will pinch and leak.
Take your time.

Thanks folks. I'll hook in soon.
Quansta, $260 probably isn't too bad considering the time involved. I just sorted some parts through a contact and they total $135 for genuine, two rocker gaskets, six plug hole gaskets and the plenum gasket. Chuck in two hours labour for the pros plus a bit of a degrease and I reckon your on the money.

ok, got some prices from southside mitsu
Rocker cover gasket $28.35 each
Inlet manifold gasket $27.28
spark plug tubes $16.80 each
so $184.78 all up..
but after reading a few more threads.. some of you are talking about a gasket "Kit"
what's different from buying just the gasket, compared to a gasket kit? and would mitsu sell the KIT?
also, i still can;t find the step by step guide for the intake manifold removal, the ones with pics etc
can anyone help?

The difference with the kit is that you will get both for around 90 bucks, do a search as I have even put the part number in another thread
Inlet gasket, unless you bend it you reuse it, does not need to be changed
To remove the manifold, with a cool engine
Remove the 2 10mm bolts for the throttle cable, extract same
Remove booster hose, let this drop down
On the back of the manifold there are 3 12mm bolts, one on the drivers side, one slightly left of centre of the manifold and one that bolts into the throttle body near the linkage
Remove cruise vac hose (if applicable)
Remove 2 12mm bolts from egr pipe on rear drivers side of manifold (if you have a TJ onwards)
Remove vac lines from top of TB, you will have 1 if TE/F or 3 if TH> from the front of the car they are red, green yellow.
Remove the pressure reg hose (look down from where the tb bolts on on the front of the manifold)
Remove the coolant hoses, (one on front of the TB, one on the rear of the TB)
Remove the 10mm bolt holding the wiring harness on the lhf side of the manifold
Remove the 10mm bolt on other end holding the CAS (trianglular plug) off the manifold
Remove 2 12mm nuts at each end of the manifold
Remove 5 12mm bolts from the top of the manifold
Lift off.
When you then do the rocker covers, there is a hose that goes from one cover to the other, is on the LHS of the car, has a clip you need to undo and is a prick to get off as the rubber goes hard also. The rear one is under the coolant pipe (metal one) Remove the hose from the top of the rear rocker cover and keep aside. Remove the top bolts from the timing covers (you do not need to if you do not want to but makes it all easier) and each cover has 12mm bolt as well.
Once the covers are off GIVE THE BREATHERS A DAMN GOOD CLEAN. If you are going to clean the covers inside and out, make sure ALL solvent is removed from the inside of the baffles. Also when the old gaskets are out you will see that the covers are made up of 2 layers and where they join makes the groove for the gasket. Gently tap this straight so the new gasket sits snug in the groove
When you reassemble make sure all breaters are also nice and clean
Without getting RSI here this is a basic guide, there is also a downloadable mits manaual in the third gen section. Most of all it is simpyl a matter of being a little paitent, group bolts you take off so they do not get mixed up etc
BTW< if you have traction control there are a few more bits to take off also, (not sure of what model you have) but when you look you will see. The bolt on eh back of the throttle body one the models with traction control is also harder to get to.

thanks heaps for that Madmagna, you make it sound oh so easy!! :D
i'll have a go next week when i'm on holidays, car needs a good degrease as well.
will do the front spark plus while i'm at it and do a full oil change as well as the fuel filter...
damn, might need the whole weekend!!!!lol :bowrofl:

Excellent guide Mal, much easier than going off the manual..
I'd just like to add a couple of tips.
1.
When removing the two coolant hoses from the throttle body coolant will spill out of the rear hose, if you plug the front hose with something before taking the rear off this won't happen.
2.
Getting the hose between the two rocker covers uncliped and off is a pain, so I removed the hose from the front cover, removed the larger rubber tubing and left the hose on the rear cover when I removed it..

i removed the throttle body from the plenum first , and left the coolant hoses connected. is that ok too? i cleaned the TB with carby cleaner as well , after removing the Idle Speed Control motor.
I found its easier to leave the TB hanging to the side and just removing the plenum. Those coolant lines can be an absolute bitch.
