Wifes been complaing about the auto playing up. Took it for a drive and its slipping when changing from 2nd to 3rd like when riding a clutch in a manual car. 1st to 2nd is fine and kickdown works fine from 3rd to2nd and 2nd to 1st. Its due for a service and the oil is a a little dark but doesnt smell burnt. any ideas anyone?

Q:do the gears slip with the overdrive off ?

change the oil with mitsubishi genuine oil and check the filter isnt clogged
check the shift linkage for alignment
check all the gearbox wiring connections for broken wires or bent pins in the connectors

when box is slipping in drive
possible faults listed in the repair manual are oil pressure and solenoid related
test A and B pulse generators
An oil pressure problem in the valve body ---(pscv solenoid )
The torque converter needs a stall test done
IF stall rpm is too high (pressure test and adjust )
The rear clutch parts worn internally ---Box overhaul

o/d hasnt worked for a while now. Stall test is in range and no variation between D and R. Only slips between 2nd to 3rd otherwise works fine.Has genuine fluid, did a partial drain of 2 litres (all that i had left ). Will be going to transmission place tomorrow for their verdict. Hope its not a rebuild (quoted $1600 to $1800) otherwise it will be driven untill it dies.

it will be driven untill it dies.

 awww dont say that!!

Be careful, theyll probably say it needs it even if it doesnt... so make sure you mention youll just drive it till it dies if it does need it coz if they know that you wont pay up (unless its a small fix) then they may state the real problem hehe.

Ive been waiting a long time to see some photos of your wagon!! Its ok that its faded, im sure weve all seen that in the 1st gens before so if you have any, id love to see :)

One of my tp execs actually does the sam ethat youve mentioned, however its only done it a couple of times... in it though the car always feels like its dragging as though it goes into first too soon or something, not something you really notice unless youre paying attention for it. Anyway, i havent done anything about it so cant help, but i dont drive it and if its only done it a couple of times im not concerned.

Anyway, havent been active on here for a while, so i think ive ranted enough for today!

Check the kickdown servo switch and the wiring from it. My wagon was doing that and I found the kickdown servo switch was broken. I got one from a wreckers for $10. That solved it.

A few weeks ago, after I replaced the engine mounts, the transmission started slipping again (i.e. flaring during gear changes). I had disturbed the wiring from the kickdown switch while getting the engine mounts out. After pushing the connectors back in properly, it is fine again.

The kickdown servo switch is on the side of the gearbox and accessible from the engine bay. It is on a round plastic plate about 3" (7 or 8cm) diameter held in place with a circlip. There is a rubber o-ring behind it to seal against oil leaks. You can safely take it off without draining the oil and at worst will only lose a few drops. Be sure to put the o-ring back when refitting it though. Otherwise you will lose oil when driving.

If I understand correctly, the transmission control unit uses information from the kickdown servo switch and the pulse generators on the transmission to co-ordinate gear changes.

Hopefully a full service will fix it. Just waiting on Mr Rudds money to come through.
