Hello All

I wish to install some small LED's just above my grill so it glows down behind it a bit. I also wanna lay more Leds in my wheel wells. How would I go about wiring and what is needed.

I'd need:
Power cable Sizing??
Inline fuse
Switch

I have a basic understanding of wiring just wondering which would work best.

Im no genius but i think there should be a relay in there between battery & switch..:)

No to neons. LED's are better!

seriously, just tap in behind the cigerette lighter and hard wire them in with the switch, saves you from running wires to the battery.

You can run a fused setup with a switch and no relay, but a relay would be a nicer way to do it, just slightly more work lol

So relay just delays the start up of lights? Anyone able to provide a diagram?

Nah mate a relay is like a remote switch, so all the load doesnt go through the switch, if that makes sense. Im posting this from my phone so i cant give you a diagram sorry mate. It keeps the wiring shorter to keep voltage drop down, and is safer than having full load current running through your dash, or wherever you put the switch. Probably not much of a risk in an led setup though! :D

If you wanted the relay-off to be delayed, hook up a capacitor to it. Makes a cool effect for underbody neons - Give them a good 10s after closing the door to turn off.

How large of a capacitor are we talking here?

NOOOO neons under the car = fail. IMO

Depends how much the lights are drawing off the power, and how long they want to stay on for after turning off the relay trigger.

If the capacitor is placed on the relay output line, it will also cause them to fade off instead of flicking off.

Nothing huge like an audio capacitor, just a normal-sized to small one.

It all depends on what you want out of your lighting?

Small led lights hiding behind the grill to give it a glowing effect. and small leds in the wheel well

One switch to power them all.

A single LED will draw about 20mA.

So first you need to work out how many LEDs there are in each tube. Once you have that you can then work out whether to wire them in series or parallel.

For example: if there are 6 LEDs in a tube (assuming they are wired in parallel), that tube will draw 6*20mA=120mA.

If you connect the tubes in series, the current will be the same, but the voltage will add. So 2 tubes connected in series will draw 120mA but need double the voltage.

I would say parallel wiring is your best bet (Your first picture). This way each tube gets fed 12V and they simple share the current equally.

Edit: sorry fixed it up, I was leading you astray!

Relays are on high current systems to take the load off the switch and have a low current draw side which is where the swith goes, just like the trigger wire on an amp.

Youd probly have to have alot of LED's before you'd need a relay

relays are recommended anyway to isolate the power source from the circuit that it is tapping in to.

Correct, But since I never knew about relays when wiring in my undercars again, I am leaving them tapped off the ciggie lighter.

I have a total of 10 LED tubes (6 inside, 4 out) running off the ACC and It's fine.
I would run a relay though. That way, you know your doing it right.
Use a 4 pin relay
Pin 30 - Power straight to battery (fused)
Pin 85 - Earth
Pin 86 - Your signal wire - So tap an ACC Line with a switch in the middle
Pin 87 - This goes to your neons/LED's whatever

I am doing my wiring properly this time around and ordered a bulk lot of 10 relays and plugs I will have fun with wiring in the weeks to come...

So yeah, you can do it 2 ways. I honestly don't see anything wrong with running a few small lights off the ACC. Also, Run the switch in the earth line, so that way you dont have another power feed coming through the cabin

im no electriatian genuis but what i did when i put two under the dash is i pulled the centre console thing (near gear shifty thing hah) and i found a plug just sitting there with 12v and it wasnt plugged into anything ( i own a TH sports) and i just wired them into that and put a switch within the wire no fuse no relay or what ever and have worked fine, i bought the ones from repco that are like 20 bucks each work well :)

never do this but, when its switched off it means theres still goin to be power at the light, just wont work cos its not a complete circuit
