Hi All,

New poster around these parts and I am hoping you can help me out with a small issue..

I am changing a starter motor in a TR 2.6 Auto.. Apart from being located in a seriously inconvenient spot, trying to un-mount it is driving me crazy!!

After having done a bit or research, I have been told to go from underneath, which I did. I removed the cables that are bolted onto the solenoid. This is where I am stuck. How am I supposed to undo the mounting bolts from under the car?? It would appear that this is a job for under the bonnet.. it is not an issue if it is.. but.. How do I put the new one in when the mounting bolts are done from under the bonnet??

This may seem like an obvious question, but this is the first time I have really done anything doesn't involve installing car audio :headbange

Thanks for all your help guys..

The job is better done from on top. The V6 gets done underneath

The 2 bolts are on the drivers side, they go through the bell housing.

When you refit, use one hand to hold up the starter and the other to start the 2 bolts

You will also need to remove the manifold brace as well to get the starter clear once undone

How do you get to the two top bolts (or nuts ?) at the top of the brace? What size are they? Look like 14 mm heads.

I use a long flexi extension or wobble bar for those who know what I mean.

From memory they are 12mm head bolts but has been a while since I removed it.

Go from under for this with the flexi extension, given the length you need make sure you use a 1/2 inch set up as 3/8 will flex too much

Gotcha!

Will try tomorrow. Extensions and a universal type joint at the ready!

If my hands were smaller I could probably do it from above, but alas, no go.

Starter motor bolts are 14mm. You need a 12mm also to remove the power to the starter. Dont forgot to unplug your negative terminal or you'll have a big spark and crap yourself.

Unbolt the bottom of the support, remove the left upper 14 mm bolt, and swing the support out of the way, to the passenger side of the car. The starter motor then slides in easy. You can reattach the cables before the starter goes in. Flexible half inch extension is a must. Getting that 14 bolt back in is a pain, "inaccessible" is an understatement!

I've got everything back in after a clutch job, but now have a "chronic no-start" problem, no spark!
Weekend warrior that I am, this clutch job has taken 2 months as it is, and something in the ignition system has died while it was just sitting there for that time . . . .

Anyhoo, I have something in my tool box that might fix the problem . . . A BOX OF MATCHES!!!

Update: Went to wreckers - upullit - and got a coil/transistor setup and replaced mine. $11. Just an educated guess, cos it did the same 2 years ago.
Thing now starts well. How can a coil or transistor die just by sitting there?
Anyhoo, scrap the "matches" cure for the moment.

Top up the gearbox, put in the driveshafts, and another TS is back on the road.
