View Full Version : Fuel Going out instead of In!

Hey guys.
Quick question... When out on the track, if I have to make a sharp right hand turn fuel ends up coming OUT of the fuel tank. Example
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4345/badz.jpg (http://img3.imageshack.us/my.php?image=badz.jpg)
What could be causing this? How would I go fixing the problem?
Cap was on TIGHT... as i constantly kept checking it as it has done it a few times.
Thanks in advance.
Rob.

Ok im over it. That sucks vaccuum isn't working in there? Have you used your cap on another magna? When you open your cap at the petrol station does it sound like air is rushing in.

Does anyone have a light??
Try another fuel cap check hoses around filler neck or possibly a hole somewhere....
Where is that lighter????

Mine makes the air rushing in sound when I open it, is that bad?

do the magnas have an overflow? some older cars do that if you take extremely hard turns

Wow, 2 posts in a row of total crap. you have exceeded all expectations.
There are several hoses from the top of your tank, there are 2 that go up to the filler and it is common for the smaller one of these to split and you will have the exact same issue.
BTW< there is not vac in the fuel tank  There is a carbon canister in the engine bay, when the tank pressurises the vapour gets stored there and then when you start the engine it will then burn the vapour. As the fuel level drops, the tank sucks fresh air in.
If you look at the pic, the fuel is coming from under the guard, not down the side of it

Eh mannn you burned me. I always thought anything that has a pressure build up which involves a "sucking" of the air into the tank to happen = vacuum

I had the black line on top of my pump come loose on my old KE (probably my fault, I damaged it taking it off one day) and fuel leaked out onto the driveway after taking it for a drive. Leaked from the same region as yours seems to be.
Pulled the bottom of the rear seat out, took the panel off, reconnected the hose properly and coated the whole area in glue. Never happened again. Good luck to whoever has to take it off though :)

Thanks to who commented on my Fail (like i was unaware) and to the people wanting to burn me alive.
Thanks MadMagna, unfortunatly that photo isnt the best but this one shows it coming out the cap section.

Um... I know its definetly coming out the cap section... it leaves a filthy stain and dirt gets attracted to it quit easily. Also Cummins can back me up on the fact it goes out the the cap..
No the cap has never been used on another magna. Its never leaked other then that.
Imagine that hitting hot brake disc! Trails of fire round the track lol

Mate, there is a valve inside your cap that may have shat itself, can happen if someone has dropped it at some stage
May be worth getting a new cap and see how you go
What I was looking at was the main bit down the bottom, might be still an idea to look in the inner guard etc to see if you find any evedence. From memory the seal to the rubber boot that holds the filler is not designed to seal very well and some could be coming up through there and the rest under. The fuel at the bottom of the pic looks far too much fuel to be coming down the guard given how hard you are cornering.
Gribbles, mate when you release the cap it is actually built up pressure you are hearing escaping from the tank, not air going in. Thus why on a hotter day it is worse.....

Can get them from Mits, Reptiles or most auto parts stores.
I prefer genuine for these as some of the aftermarket ones are fairly average

That's why there's a place to put the cap inside the fuel flap when filling up, so you don't forget it :P

You could try a few servos, just say you left your cap there and get one for nothing
When i worked in a servo we had stacks of 'em

The first intelligent comment in this thread! Ignore everything else said!
Stick your head under the rear passenger side of the car and have a look. Perhaps pull the trim off the inside of the boot on that side and have a really good look. Look for loose clamps and split hoses.

OooooooooooKkkkkkkkk!!!.. Sorry this has taken so long but here is a picture of the Fuel neck thingy. If anyone can tell me if thats normal or not that would be great. Thanks,

Cheers.

Checked my TL and it doesn't have those cracks, although it could be different between the models.

Checked my TH, not there, possible split in the pipe between where you stick the nozzle in and the tank, maybe behind the body work?

25-02-2011, 05:39 PM
Alright then... so how the hell do i fix that? lol
pwn3d_69er
25-02-2011, 06:20 PM
I guess, make sure its bone dry, fill it till 'click', go for a hard right then have a peek where its all wet, around the fill point and up the body work if possibale, or try and buy a new cap from mits and try that, I cant think of much
Rob_TH_Magna

Cap is new... No fuel comes out underneath the body it all comes out the filler cap.. If i didnt wash the car today i would of shown the stains that run out my filler cap.

My TH filler neck isn't split like yours either. I'd imagine that you'd need to replace it.
Here's the fuel tank diagram for the TH taken from the service manual.

I'd also be checking the vapour hose as well.

Yeah that doesn't look good. You will have too replace the filler neck. Will be a tad fiddlie but chat to Mal as he should have something like that and can tell you how hard it is too fit.

I think you're actually missing a piece!
**went to check mine and compare, took pics**

It might just be model-difference (my TE and KE are like this) but see where the "crack" (ring/seam) is on mine, its behind the front-most sealing surface.

huh? are you being sarcastic with a witty joke of not having a fuel cap??? just making sure. lolIf you compare your photo with the above, yes the piece seems to be in both where the splits are (expansion ring??) but wacky's seems to have the sealing ring further 'forward' of it than yours? if that makes any sense? look at the two photo's side by side and you should see what I mean.
My theory, flame away, is that the filler cap isn't properly seating against the seal ring, because of the plastic piece with the splits (which I think are meant to be there)
Agreed! Robs appears to be defective.
Mine doesnt have the splits. But more importantly, that inner part where it seals sits much more proud of the rest.

Im so sorry for popping this thread back up. But I thought that everyone should know that.........

Have not had trouble since.
Atleast i didnt have to pay for anything haha...
Thanks for everyones input by the way.
