Hey everyone

My driver's seat base bolster is getting a little compressed on the right hand side from getting out of the car for many years. Does anybody know whether you can get replacement seat base foam from Mitsubishi? If so, would anybody have a part number/estimated cost and whether it is easy to fit (do I need sewing skills etc:P )?

Thanks in advance!

Here's a PM convo I had with Blackbird steve a while back....

G'day mate

I just noticed that you said in your post that Mitsubishi even sells the seat foam for the TJ's seats (I never knew, mine needs replacing)

Do you know a part number, know how much the foam is and know how easy it is to replace the foam in the seat?

Cheers mate.

Dave.

G'Day Dave,

I certainly do champ...
The base p/n: MI-AW347072 retail price $57.32
the back p/n: MI-MR920556 retail price $64.75
You need a 12mm socket and ratchet, a pair of good quality long nose pliers.

The seat has to come out.. the base is the hardest one, 4 bolts underneath... and then you have to unclip the outer edge of the base. after you release the edge (carefully) there are a whole stack of these little clips that hold the seat cover to the foam, (Gives the seat the shape)

They are loops of wire (That every car manufacturer uses) that loop around the attachment points on the actual cover, pain in the butt, cos there's like 20 of them. when replacing them I used medium sized cable ties (Zip ties) instead of these loops of wire cos they are super hard to loop around again.

The back rest is easier... again without the base installed, unclip the very bottom and carefully lift the cover up... same thing as the base though with these wire loop thinkys... As you peel the cover up there are about 12 to 16 loops you need to un wind and take out....
Once you get some new foam, you have to make the small holes for the zip ties to thread through, do this before you put the covers on. Also don't miss any attactment points for these wires/ties as the seat will look terrible....

The headrest's two posts can be removed from the inside of the seat by two plastic pieces that unclip... makes the whole job easier.

If I've confused the hell out of you, just go really slow and carefully as it's fairly straight forward... once it's done though it will look like a brand new seat.
Oh yeah if you use zip ties.... once you tighten them and trim off the excess, rotate them under the cable so when you sit in the seat you don't feel them.

If you're not really confident, you can also take it to an automotive trimmer to do the whole lot... It took me about 2 hours to do the whole seat...
Hope this helps.. I know my explanation might seem confusing, but it's straight forwad if you take your time and don't rush.....

I have the factory service manual but it doesn't cover the details above... only taking the base and backrest off... no retrimming stuff at all....
Cheers

steve
