This is more of an 'in theory' thread as apposed to im going to do this.
I have always found car pc's to be pretty slow and they seem to struggle with what i want. So i was thinking that an xbox / xbox360 based system could work really well. The main issues being that the system wouldnt have a touch screen. However, after a quick look on the net i have found heaps of guides on relocating the controllers buttons. Sooooo i was thinking, a fibreglassed in 7 inch screen to the dash with the buttons going down along the side, with the headunit underneath so i can still use regular headunit functions if i wish (i have rear AUX intputs)
comments, criticiisms welcome
that sounds like a good idea, i think Michello did a custom dash for his CarPC, look up his thread.
but that seems good, and if you ever wanna play games, just hook up a controller and you're good to go!

Im not to computer savvy, how would you do this?
Like use random buttons to mimmick the operations of the controller orr?

you extend the controller buttons, so you pull apart the controller and take the plastic shell off so you just have the buttons ad the printed circuit board. then you fibreglass it into the dash :) or you can make a smaller wireless controller which doesnt have all the buttons

Waste of a controller, should just go buy one of those **** copy ones off ebay or something.
Yeah i get what ya mean, but why don't you just use and XBOX remote - don't they control your XBOX...

Not a bad idea, but would the XBOX have troubles with overheating?

my thoughts were to take the xbox out of its case and use my nifty little under seat tray + some extra cooling from pc fans :)
Good idea for an xbox classic under the seat, I'll be bringing mine along for MM09 - Guess we'll see how it performs :) Mine is softmodded with XBMC installed. X360 would have major overheating issues...

Comes stock in TJ1.5/2 Magna's. Not sure if it's big enough to hold an xbox though.

mine was in my TJ1 when i bought it. So im not sure
with a bit of modding anything can fit ;)

It's mainly the height that would stop it imo (I seen Owen's on sunday, it'd be pushing it)
on another note - maybe all TJ's then eh? :P
Xbox as a media centre would definately work well though...

I tried so hard to get the touchscreen working with the xbox, had linux installed and all the drivers, just wasn't going to all come together the way I had hoped though.
Overheating was a problem I had at first, after upping the fan speed to 100% the problem is pretty much gone.
It's a bit of a hack job, but very stable and fast to boot, now I just need to get an amp turn on delay sorted.

What makes you think car pc's are slow? Mines running on a 1.33ghz Celeron and I've never had any performance issues, even when running video and nav at the same time.
I recently bought myself a used, chipped Xbox to put in my car for additional entertainment (passengers when driving, me when parked, W?BIC.), and while it will be great for gaming, there is no way it would be as good as my Car PC.
Not sure about Xbox1, but Xbox360 would chew through discs in no time.
Soon as you touch the damn things they engrave a nice ring into a disc

Chipped Xbox with games stored on HDD FTW :D
Ah thats right......all good.
Then its really only the heating problem thats gotta be overcome - not too hard as stated above.
