The basics...
- Oil leaks
- Engine mounts
- Service history
- Make sure it steers straight
- Listen for engine, suspension, and steering noises

It's almost $3k too much...

i was more so after specifics rather than basics..
does 7 or 8 grand sound more practical?
are the tippy gearboxes the weaker of the lot?

not a bad deal really for a vrx... make sure that it hasn't been in a crash, check the panels and the paintwork

Give it a bit off a thrash and make sure the GB doesn't slip/flare or anything, also check the colour of the fluid.
Other than that check all the things you'd check on any other car, and should do a revs check on any car your lookin at.
10k's not the cheapest, i recently payd $8.5k for my '02 series 2 TJ VRX with 106xxxk's and immaculate, most you see going for 7-8 have alot of k's.
If the car is really tidy and has all services up to date and so on its probly worth paying 10k for a good one.
As far as pros and cons, sunroof is a big pro to start with (i didn't get one:cry: ) im yet to find a con.
Im sure she would be extremly happy with the car, i know i am :D

OP: search around on the forums man. I've posted heaps of info on what to look for when looking for a new Magna.

Basically look at ATF colour if it's an auto, if the fluid is brown or smells burnt, steer clear. Look for leaking power steering on the firewall half way down on the drivers side (thick black hose running along the firewall, should be free from any black soot). Check all fluid levels and make sure the engine oil is relatively clean. Check all the tyres are legal size and load rating. When taking the car for a drive, make sure there's no rack rattle going over smaller jarring type bumps, listen for suspension clunks and give the brakes a good test.
The biggest, most important thing, is to make sure the car has log books and that they're up to date and complete. Request receipts for work done like timing belt etc. Also just check the quality of the interior and the exterior, inside door sills and boot lid will give you an idea of if the car has been looked after or not.
I mean realistically, if the car is in good condition, I'd probably offer them $8.5k and a max of $9k. If it's a good, clean car, and you really like it, you may want to offer $10k, but that's up to you. I just had a quick look on Redbook and Carsales - Redbook would indicate a car of that age and KMs would fetch $9k at best. Carsales would indicate some lunatics are looking for $14k because their car has 19" rims and a stereo.

Tim, is this the white one on carsales atm with the stripes on the side? If so, i went and had a look at it too last week and the body was pretty damn rough, big depression in the rear bar, front bar doesn't align very well and the front of the car / bonnet is just a mess of stone chips, wheels look like they have been run up every gutter in brisbane, and the paint in general is looking pretty shabby.
Put it this way, i'm getting a little desperate to find a decent car, but even i walked away. After checking out the condition of the body, i didnt even bother going for a drive in it.
