TS 2.6 Manual.
3 years ago I checked the ignition timing with a powered timing light when the engine spluttered and died. No spark, nothing obviously wrong. I took the ECU, distributor, coil and power transistor to a specialist who tested everything and found the coil had died. $90 for the new coil and $80 for the ECU test, and the thing started again.
Yesterday, after not being started for 2 months (slow clutch job) it refused to start. Getting a dose of Deja Vu I bought a second hand coil/power transistor from U-Pull-It which fixed the problem.
Question 1: Anyone else having coil related problems like this or was I just unlucky?
Question 2: Is there an after market coil replacement that I can buy/throw in the boot so I don't get stranded and in need of an expensive tow at some inconvenient time?

Thanks

In the case of the ignition coil, from my understanding the engine will still crank, but will not get any spark.
I believe Bosch make aftermarket ignition coils, but i'm not sure what vehicle models they officially support (in regards to whether they now only manufacture coil packs, or traditional coils). When I next get access to their parts catalogue, this week perhaps, i'll look it up.

A dead coil is easy to check - the engine cranks at normal speed, but it doesn't fire. I removed the high tension lead from the distributor centre and put the end on top of the rocker cover. There should be a big fat spark between the copper end of the lead and the cover when you crank the engine, but I got nothing. The gregorys manual states that there should be a resistance of 4.5 K ohm to 7 K ohm between the high tension connection and the negative of the low tension connector - I got nothing (ie infinity) , so the coil was open circuit. Why it should be dead after the car has been sitting there doing nothing for 2 months when it was ok before, is beyond me.

The factory coil is made by Bosch Australia, but I'm hoping to be able to get another brand - why buy bosch when I've had 2 of their coils die in the last 3 years? If I get desperate I will get another original from u-pull-it and have that in the boot as a spare. Don't want to get stranded with no sparks out in the middle of nowhere!

Do all TS 2.6 magnas have ignition coils? And, can they be temprimental i.e not work only sometimes if they are on their way out?
Thanks

Perhaps Tridon Australia, I believe they also make a wide range of ignition components (including coils) and from experience, their stuff is pretty good. Could also try Echlin, i'm fairly certain they make coils too.
EDIT:
Tridon Part Number TIC014 (Desc: Ignition Coil for TR/S EFI 4G54 2.6)
Couldn't find details for the Echlin coils.

i had the same problem with my kr v6.
it refused to start one day and i got my uncle to come out to see what was up. he told me start it and there were blues sparks jumping from the coil to the coil lead... it had a hair line fracture. i got replace by my mechanic and it was fixed.
i think bosch was the only brand that did them. cos i asked and they said bosch...

Yep, all 2.6 engines have the same design of coil. Early 2.6s had a different primary circuit connection to the later one,m so if you need one from the wreckers you need to know which type.
AFAIK they either work or they don't, not temp related. The coils are immersed in solid plastic within the coil, and if there is a voltage jump across windings within the coil then the thing will go open or closed circuit, and not work.
I shall be doing the rounds of the parts shops this week to see if non-Bosch alternatives are available.

Yeah, thats what they do. That's why I want a working spare in the boot as well as a multimeter. 5 mins to check, 10 mins to change over. Shouldn't be too stressful on the side of the road, as long as it isn't raining, 43 degree heat or in the middle of a bushfire . . .
