View Full Version : new brakes, arrrrgh help needed!
I travelled 200km to see Magna00 this morning to get 380 brakes fitted. We got as far as trying to unscrew the brake line from brake piping on the passenger side. It was completely stuck. We ended up completely stripping the bloody bolt right down to its guts. So, without 380 brakes I have driven 200km home again  why did mitsubishi use this **** way of connecting the pipework to the lines??
Magna00 is kind enough to post the brakes down to me once he has found replacements for his. Question is, I now need the new pipework from the ABS sender unit to the brake line connection. I will get some pics up a bit later. Anyone got spare available, or know where I can find it? Fuming!!!!

It might be a good idea to visit a wrecker, and strip one from a wreck. It'll give you a good idea on how to do it, and if you smoke it, there'll be another one to pinch.
It may also be a good idea to invest in some penetrating oil, and a couple of brake spanners. They're almost like a normal open end spanner, but they have a little nub on each of the inside surfaces, instead of a flat surface. The nubs exert force on the flat sides of the nut, instead of the corners. One of the few lifesaving tools that I've bought.

was gonna say did you use the correct spanner?
you need a 10mm brake line spanner when loosening the nut, also need a normal 17mm spanner
thats abit of bad luck mate :(, hopefully you get it sorted
We were using the 17mm on the larger nut, and a normal 10mm spanner on the smaller one. I had no idea that you needed a special tool to do this, and it seems magna00 didn't know either
450km trip and pissing around with brakes, I am soooo tired right now.
i will try and get to pick and payless next saturday, and also will call mitsubishi for a part number to see how much they are new.
I was wondering if there was someone in Sydney who has experience with magna brakes if they could help me.

there is a trick to using just normal spanners on those flared nuts to get them off.
you set it up and use a hammer to smack the 10mm spanner around. 2 reasons this works nicely is, because there isnt a great amount of torque on it, the worst thing that happens is the spnner flies off without wrecking the nut and on the flip side of that, if it works, the sudden accerlation of the spanner gives such an instant force it is usually enough to break the seal so to speak that these things seem to hold for years.
Worked everytime so far

its a flare nut spanner it grips the nut by more angles than a open end spanner.
yep, looks like a ring spanner with abit cut out to go around the brake line
pretty much grabs the nut better then a normal spanner
cant use a normal 10mm as the metal is very soft and can round easy
its a bit late for this guys. Anyone know if its possible to buy the brake piping from mitsu?

Yes, it is possible to buy the brake piping from Mitsu.

Your prices will be a little more expensive, as I think mine had an MMAL staff discount. But it will not be more than double.
I had the same problem when doing mine, and no, not even a ring spanner was able to do the trick. The bolts freeze on there for good.
thanks for that d-van! I will grab both just in case the other side is a bugger to get off. Cheers!

Don't feel bad,
I rounded one off a couple of years ago and had to get a new line from mitsu. Front driver side. It was a prick to get in to. I think its an industry conspiracy to sell more brake lines. Brake shops will also make you a new one but it will cost 3 times as much.
Technique that work 90% of the time is;
Use plenty of penatrant oil. (Even the day before)
use the flare nut spanner, and tap with suitable hammer. dont be too rough.
If it's really bad, use could use a bit of heat or the freeze and release stuff. You just need to upset the corrosion enough to free it.
we hit it with the freeze stuff but only on the same morning. I feel better now that the lines are reasonably priced
Damn, bad luck man... Should have PM'd you before we left, I was with Owens_Mighty_Magna at Brad's place while he was getting the engine mount replaced...

For all those doing Brakes, ALWAYS use a brake line spanner, they are not expensive.
I assume you have killed the line where the rubber hose bolts up to the inner guard on the bracket?
You can also remove the pipe and take it to ABS for a new flare nut to be fitted. Try and not bent it too much, can be a bit of a bugger to get out of the hole in the inner guard
If not ABS, I should have some lying around also
A bit of bending was undertaken in order to feed it out of the inner guard, but it didn't get damaged and the rubber hose has survived the ordeal. I did a couple of emergency brakes from 100kph and it hauled up perfect. I figured if it would 'let go' it would have done it under extreme conditions. Also, I was totally shocked by how well the standard brakes stopped a 1500kg car from 100kph! That was the first time that I have properly stood on them in angst.
Thanks for the offer mal, but with the cheap-rate that the pipework sells for from mitsu brand new, I will just get new stuff and bolt it all up to the 380 brakes whilst off the car and hopefully get someone from Sydney to give me a hand. With the right spanner this time! If only Magna00 knew to use a specific spanner :doubt:
oh yeah, make sure you don't put your hands anywhere near a brake disc after an emergency stop

i thought magna00 would have known about the special spanner
seeing as he knowns abit about everything else
sorry mate should have told ya when you asked me about my brakes :(

If only Magna00 was not simply a total tool all together hmmmm
So are you doing fronts only or front and rear?
Just the fronts. I imagine it would be a complete pain in the ass for a novice like me to attempt replacing the rear brake lines. I am ordering just the front left pipe today, and will pop into Supercheap for the proper spanner. After watching Magna00 dis-assemble the brakes, it really doesn't look that difficult. The only bit i think I will have trouble with is bleeding the brakes.
We bled them when we put the old ones back on, and the pipe into the ABS sender wasn't screwed back in enough and brake fluid was pouring out like a fountain over the car. Luckily we had a hose nearby to jetwash the brake fluid off the paint!

If you still wanted some help to get them fitted, I might be able to wander over on Sunday, and bring my tools to save you buying them.

When you bleed them, grab a clear coke or similar bottle, make a hole in the lid large enough to pit some old vac hose through. Use some wire to tie around the top of the bottle and then a hook on the other end so you can hang the bottle off the rotor or similar. Make a vent hole near the top as well
When you bleen the brakes, hook up the hose to the nipple, open the nipple. You will then gently pump the pedal 8 or so times, check your fluid and do same. I usually give 2 lots of 8 which will ensure new fluid is pumped through. Tighten up the nipple, remove the hose and work your way around the car.

Thing is, Magna00 won't post them until he has replacements on his car. Which could be weeks. If it's ok, I might ask you to give me a hand when I do get them posted down to me? cheers heaps!

Thats a pretty cool tip there, I guess it negates the use of needing a second pair of hands!
