View Full Version : Air Conditioner Stopped Working

Hi guys,
The other day I had my stock muffler fitted, after which the Air Conditioner stopped working. Now I know it's probably just pure coincidence, but does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong?

All the electrics in the car are working fine, I can press all the buttons, and the indicators light up showing that the fan is increasing speed, but nothing comes out of the vents. The fan doesn't appear to be working. This happened a couple of days ago, then it suddenly kicked in when I was driving. It was working fine for the last couple of days, but then yesterday after work it wasn't working again, and it hasn't started working this morning.

Hottest days of the year and the damn A/C packs up :(

I have just been to a couple of places, and general consensus is the A/C motor's given up. $450 to rebuild, maybe $650+labour for a new one. Anyone else been in this situation, and can recommend a cheaper option?

Thanks!

Sure a fuse hasnt blown?

Also, if your fans arent working, it would most likely be the fan box, not the AC compressor.

The fan box is an absolute bitch to get out as well, iirc the dash will have to come out.

It's not a fuse, it occasionally works, and the guy I went to said it was the motor. Will go and get a second opinion later today, but he seems to be right.

Well, you say the fans arent running, the fan box however is under the dash/behind the centre console. Where the AC compresser is in the engine bay, and comes in to the cooling unit, which sits between the fan box and another componant of the cooling/heating system (forgot the name of it, there are 3 parts joined together under the dash going between the centre console and under the glove box.

He may be referring to the fan box when he says the engine... But keep note, if it is this, its going to cost quite a bit as the dash will have to come out.

as said by Life,

fan not working, = fan problem (under dash).. air coming out but not cold = compressor/gas problem (start looking at a/c compressor which hangs off the side of your engine..

If the internal fan is not working then the issue lies in electricals and not the aircon compressor. If the fan is not coming on the air con compressor will also not come on thus why this expert decided teh aircon compressor is not working.

Non climate can be
a. fuse, may be dirty contacts on the fan fuse as well, if not blown take it out and place it back in agian to eliminate dirty contacts
b. Speed controller, there is a resistor pack in the middle box that may be playing up however usually this will mean one speed is not working not all.
c. fan switch, as in b.

Climate control
a. controller in dash
b. as per b. above

Also could be the fan unit itself, There should be a 2 pin plug under the fan box (remove the trim under the dash to locate) and this could have been unplugged or moved

Well the climate unit looks like it's doing what it should, but nothing is coming out of the vents.

Well the climate unit looks like it's doing what it should, but nothing is coming out of the vents.

That is because the fan is not running. Climate control display can tell you there is icecream in the air filter, does not mean you will have a choc top there when you look.

The climate control may think that the signal has been sent to the fan but the signal may not be getting out or the fan may not be getting the signal due to there being a faulty part along the way INCLUDING the climate control unit

Depending where you are on the coast, take it to kevin at east coast auto electrics. he's a whizz with aircon and electrics. They are a few places I wouldn't recommend, but won't say in the open :D

If it turns out to be the climate control I have a spare one about the place, just needs the globes behind the screen replaced as I used them in the one I've got in my car. Might help.

mr_cosmo: East Coast are in Price St Nambour? If so I might head down there and see what they say.

you didnt let LIFE go near the ac with a drill did you?? sorry had to say it...

if the ac isnt working staright after the new muffler, they should be the ones fixing it... i guess it would be kinda hard to prove though...

Thanks for all the suggestions: I have just been to East Coast and am taking the car there on Wednesday morning. Kevin was really good, obliging and best of all best price! $190 + ~$50 labour. Thanks again!

Did you mention this site or any of us at all? Thought he might remember my EVO...

Sorry, guess I should have stated - it needs a new motor. The one in my car currently has worn out brushes, so it only works sometimes. Doesn't seem to work when I start up the car, but once I go over a bump or a pothole it starts going again. New motor arriving from Brisbane tomorrow, will be able to be fitted while I wait on Wednesday morning!
