Morning all,
I've got a 2003 TJ and recently it's developed a problem. There's a ticking sound coming from behind the CD player. It stops after about 25 seconds but it's quite loud and annoying. It's not there when you turn on the accessories, but as soon as you move the key onto 'on' or start it up, the ticking starts. My dad believes it to be a relay but he can't pin point where it's coming from.
Anyone have any ideas?

What I would do is remove the CD player so you have access back there and then see if you can find it by ear when you turn the ignition on.

Yeah, done that. It's very hard to pin point. Guess it's not a common problem then.

If you can see the relays I would place my hand or finger on them and you will feel it ticking and you would have found it ?

is it coming from behind the CD player, or maybe from the climate control.
mine makes a ticking/clacking noise for a short while (usually less than 30 seconds) as soon as you turn the key on. it's something to do with the climate control as it goes away when you play with the temperature setting.
I used to think I was going to fix it, but it's way up under the dash and would require far too much work.

Yeah, played with that also and couldn't feel much. Will have a better look at it tomorrow as it started raining when we got the CD player out. Was just hoping someone knew so we could diagnose it quickly.

Well, even when the climate control is off it still ticks. However, I did turn the climate control on whilst driving and it started ticking again, but I couldn't reproduce it later. It does sound like it's coming from the CD player, but now I have somewhere else too look.
Great, somewhere hard to fix. That's the last thing I want.

try this. thurn off the cabin fan. turn it back on. It works for me, but in theory, it really should not be happening... AND, it only happens sometimes.. QUITE ANNOYING.. AARRGGH.

You may have a dried leaf in the works. Turn the fan on high speed and shred the thing. Dodge the leaf bits as they fly out the vents!

i had a problem like this on my TX3... it was the fuel relay behind the dash... turning the fuel pump on off because the motor wasnt running/or been started.

ive just had the same problem! got into my car after work on wednesday and it started ticking from somewhere around the climate control. stops after about 30 secs as well, sounds like plastic gears jammed or something anyone else have this problem and sorted it?
My '02 TJ just started this same noise today, sounds like a vent trying to move but getting stuck..any ideas?
I had the same problem, and guessed it was climate control related. What was happening on startup this loud ticking/clicking noises with a 1 second period started, and would continue on for about 30 secs and stop. Sometimes I could get it to stop by playing with the climate controls.
Basically one of the gears switching the air from recycle to outside was stuffed. The next service I get them to replace it. I can't remember exactly, but I think it was about $90 to replace the 'box' and not too much in labor. Or something like that. Either way to fix it, it wasn't super cheap, nor was it expensive to say no and keep with the annoying sound.
Problem solved.

Yeah i had the same problem a few months ago. Was thinking it might be the blower having dead leaves stucked in it, so I used the full air blast for 2 weeks but it didn't go away!
Finally had it looked at by one of the QLD member who has his own auto-air shop. Turns out its one of the climate control motor that's a goner and that little thing sits somewhere behind the HU!
IIRC, from what I saw and what the guy told me, the climate control unit has about 2-3 little motors controlling the entire setup and one of them has failed due to wear and tear.
The clip/part that was supposed to tell the motor that it has reached the end of the turn in one particular direction has given way, however, it works fine if the motor was turning in the opposite direction as the clip in that direction is still intact.
If the motor is turning in the direction at fault, it has nothing to stop it and so it just keeps going and going until its pre-programmed time out of about 15secs or so. That's why u will get that clicking sound.
It's in a little tight spot and cost me close to $180 including labour to have it fixed.

Can't remember off the top of my head. Will look for the receipt and see if it is listed there. If not I'll ask the member directly.

Can't find the receipt anywhere. The best person to ask is 96_Altera.
