In my old car (piece of **** VL), I have a pair of (what I think are) 6.5" Alpine Type S speakers. Would it be worth taking these out and replacing the stock speakers in the front of my TH Advance? Would the sound be any better?

And while I'm talking about my speakers, my front two are constantly cutting out, if I take my ashtray out and shove my hand back there to wiggle the wires around, the front left speaker will come back in, but not the front right. Is this just ****ty wiring that needs to be replaced, or something worse?

Cheers!

I'd change them over, standard speakers in magnas are poo.
I would take the HU out and check the wiring back there, sounds like loose wires.

Cool, any tips on taking the head unit and speakers out? I would assume I have to rip everything apart somehow :(

hmm that's a TJ series II with climate control... I wish that was my car!

Similar way of doing things though? And how about ripping the door apart to get the speaker out? Is it just plug and play i.e. I unplug the speaker from the door and plug in the new one, put door back on?

thanks :)

Sorry man, i can't help you in that aspect. I'll try and find out for you and get back to you, if not someone will post up for you.

EDIT: My post saying the concept is the same was about removing the centre console etc.

i'm actually seriously suprised with the factory front speakers in my KJ rada...

the woofers are the same as a normal magna (i know cos i have a TH that i gave to dad, which i put some clarion splits in before i got the KJ)

but they have a mid-high in the dash (kinda useless) and a tweeter in the top corner of the door (like most modern cars)

i have a decent sony DVD/touchscreen head deck, running a cheapish 4 ch to all speakers (just some $99 kenwood 6x9's in the back) and a 8 yr old kicker solo sub.. and dead set it sounds actually half decent... nothing extravagant.. but alot of ppl assume i have some decent gear in there.. you can crank it suprisingly hard but have to make sure the amp has a decent HPF...

i want to upgrade to 6.5" splits front and rear, with a decent sub though..

that's pretty cool man, my stock speakers are ok but I can't turn it up to loud or it just turns to mush, especially the bass. thinking about changing over all the speakers (including the 6x9s in the back) and getting a sub, maybe second hand off of boostcruising

A set of Type S splits would definitely be better than the stock speakers.

RE: the speakers, Is it just plug and play i.e. I unplug the speaker from the door and plug in the new one, put door back on?

No. The standard speakers connect using a proprietary plug. You would need to cut the end off this plug and attach the wires directly to the positive and negative terminals on the back of your new speaker.

Awesome, thanks for that. And I don't know if they're "splits" (I keep hearing this word so often, don't understand what it means), I just know that they're basic speakers. :-)

Can anyone tell me how I would go about getting the speakers out from the front doors, and the rear of the wagon?

Splits are where the tweeter and the woofer are physically separate, and are usually wired to a crossover (a small box that accepts the input from your headunit/amplifier and outputs to the tweeter and woofer). I skimmed your first post but I assume that you had splits :P

To get the speakers out of the front door, you just need to get the door trim off. Remove one screw from behind the door handle, one screw from inside the little pocket/handle on the door (there's a piece of trim on top of it you have to remove), and one screw from the front of the door where the air runs from the centre console to the door. Then just lever the trim clips with a screwdriver or something similar. Once you get the trim off, the speaker is held in with five screws in a plastic trim.

BTW, no I do not have splits, just basic type s speakers :D

I've got Type S's in my front doors and they sound great, considerably better than stock. Tweeters fit perfectly in the stock pods too.

The stock splits were ok, certainly better than base model speakers, but the Type S's smash them, and they aren't particular pricey speakers

agreed, my stock speakers are a ****load better than my parents' BA Falcon, my mates VZ commo and his parents' VE commo. Considering my car is a 96 TE, compared to a 2005 and 2008 model car, i'd say that's pretty gd!

well guys I decided that today I would venture down to the Mitsi Clearance Warehouse, picked up a couple of things, namely two 8cm mid-range speakers for the inserts on the dash! Cost me about $7 hahahah awesome!

So what do I need to do to wire these little babies up? At the moment I've just got them sitting in the holes, they look rad!

And I tried getting the door trims off today, I got so far as to taking out the screws behind the door handle and the air suction bit, but when it came to taking off the trim around the door handle (where I was told the third screw is located) I got a bit antsy and didn't go any further, fearing I might break something!

Any tips?

the third screw is located in the recessed handle bit that u pull on to close the door, there's a little cover in there that you remove, and then you'll see the screw to undo in there...

edit: decided it was easier to go take a couple photos lol

On that note, easiest way is: Flathead screwdriver to get the clip out, Phillips head for the screw.

Provided they are 6" -

A soldering iron, solder, a pair a wire strippers, and a pair of wire snippers.

The speakers will fit right into place, its just a matter of stripping the wire and soldering the speaker on.

so I need to cut the wire connected to the stock speakers, then solder the bare wires to the two terminals on the speaker? seems easy enough

while we're on the subject of speakers, I bought two little 8cm speakers for the dash. what stuff will I need to hook them up? I would have thought the headunit would be running out of outputs on the back...

For those midrange 3" speakers in the dash, you *might* have the wiring in place already.

There's some reports that the wiring is already there ready to go.

Check if the speakers have a capacitor wired onto them - if they dont, you need to solder one inline to filter out lower frequencies (and high frequencies perhaps?).

If there's no wiring, you'll need to run wires from them to your headunit/amp.

that'd be awesome if it was there, how do I know if the wiring's there? actually the wiring might have disappeared into the car somewhere because it has an aftermarket headunit... I guess I'll have to buy some wires (which ones!) and rip my headunit out :P man this is gonna be a pain in the ass...

If you disconnected your battery you'll prob have to retrain the ECU

1. Let the car idle for 5 minutes with AC off in N or P
2. Let the car idle for 5 minutes with AC on in N or P
3. Let the car idle for 5 minutes with AC off in D
4. Let the car idle for 5 minutes with AC on in D
5. Driver like a grandpa for the next 100km

Thats my reset method, seems to work quite well.

Hmm well I freaked out and told my step-dad, we tightened the accellerator cable... is that bad? We just raised the revs because basically when I turned the car on the revs would just drop and the car would turn off...

When your car re-learns it'll **** up your idle. It should idle at 700rpm when trained.

Annese
06-03-2009, 01:05 PM
Yea mate i'd try un-tighten it back to where it was and then re-train the ECU. There's instructions on how to do that on here somewhere if you search but it's something like let it idle for 10 minutes when u first start it and then baby it for a few days...

twlvlksjstlky
06-03-2009, 02:35 PM
Well at the moment it idles at about 500rpm, before the accellerator cable was fairly loose because it took about an inch and a half of pushing the accelerator in before it would kick in... so I was going to get it tightened anyway. I might leave it for a bit and see how it retrains itself - if I see any sign of it *********** up I'll loosen the cable

does that sound reasonable?

Dude when you reset the ECU you should let it idol for at least 5mins. If you suddenly slow down while the Tranny is learning it can "stall" the engine. Either that or your battery is going to pack it in.

As for the swap, a guy swapped a paper clip for a house ( eventually ). You just have to see value in what your swapping. As for the speakers, I hold the DD's in much higher regard than most of the speakers that Alpine produce.
