Well yesterday I was low on fuel, but my fuel gauge wasn't even on the last notch yet and then all of a sudden the bastard ran out of fuel on me at lights in peak hour. Previously my fuel gauge has been right under the last notch and I've still had plenty of fuel so I'm guessing there is something wrong with it.

Which parts do I have to take out and replace to get this thing fixed, would simply replacing the instrument cluster fix it?

I would place my bet on the fuel sender unit itself, I'd grab one from the wreckers 1st and try that out.

Yeah I'll replace that then, how do I get to it, is it just under the back seat?

There is a sqaure plate under the bottom section of the back set, unscrew it and I heard its in there somewhere :P

Be careful getting one from the wreckers.
They had a fault in them for years before a revised FSU was released. Or so a 'Trust-worthy' dealer informed me several years back when mine failed.

The fault you experienced is not a standard mode of failure. They typically just stop registering at all.

I actually had the same problem and when I saw it was empty I thought I should fill it up but only got $10 worth of petrol put in as there was still petrol in it. I thought it was the fuses but the fuses were ok.

Then i decided to go to the Mitsu dealer and they replaced it for me but I can't remember how much it cost as it was last year. I will check at home on how much did the replacement costs me. I keep the service bills in my filing cabinet so should get the info for you late tonight(if I am not already drunk from poker :bowrofl: )

Around $75.00 for the part.

more than likely it is the fuel sender... ive never looked at a magna fuel sender before but i know on older cars u can earth the wire to the gauge out to test it... cant remember which way but ie wire disconnected (unlimited resistance )the gauge will read full. earth it out ( no resistance) and it should read empty... or other way around (the gauge reading i mean)
