hey guys, I was just wondering what is the best way to pair amps and speakers? for example, if I have a 4 channel amp with 60W x 4 at 2ohms, should I pair this with all speakers being 60WRMS? i.e. 2x 6x9s at 60WRMS, plus 2x6"s at 60WRMS.
Or is there a better way of doing things?

Provided the speaker wattage is less than or equal to the RMS value of the amplifier output, you shouldn't have a drama...

What is the amps rating at 4ohms?
I dont think you can go too wrong matching a 60wrms amp with roughly 60wrms speakers

So the amps' RMS value should always be higher than or equal to the speakers? And is that at 4 or 2ohms, because the speakers give two different RMS values for both 2 and 4 ohms...

Thats a fairly low powered amp, can be a good thing in terms of cost though as you shouldnt have to spend alot on some speakers to match

I was really just using it as an example... What sort of rated power should I be looking at for good sound quality? I'm a music enthusiast (lol) but have no idea about this technical side of things, as you can probably tell. I would be completely willing to wait a bit longer to save up some cash to get some better gear :D then again, I don't just want to buy the most expensive thing when I can do just as well by buying cheaper

Well it depends which type of music you listen to really. There are 50wrms speakers that are great for clarity, with crystal clear sound, or speakers rated at 125wrms, that are also great, but are more bassey. So it depends what type of music you listen to.
Also, most speakers are rated at 4ohms, so you generally use this reading of the amp (and at 14V- aka when the car is running) . It is possible to wire speakers down to 2ohms, but i wouldnt recommend this as it puts more stress of the amp.

thanks for the clarification on the ohms, appreciate it
I listen to a lot of hardcore and rock, instrumental music, but sound quality is a big deal to me. Don't need heaps of bass, clarity is more important - I'm not into techno and stuff. A bit of rap now and then, but again sound quality is more important.
Any suggestions on 6x9s and some 6"s?
also, if I have a pair of good quality 6x9s amped up, would I need a sub? A friend bought a sub recently and it really adds depth to music, but I would assume that the 6x9s would cater for this...

6.5" pioneer PRS's front and rear lol..
thats an easy way to spend 1K :) there decent splits though and they don't need a heap of power

What is your price range?
6x9" speakers are probably fine in the bass department judging by the type of music you have specified. If you are a bass junkie then a subwoofer will be great.
Subwoofers play lower frequencies than a 6x9" can and would fill up the 'gap' (The frequencies that the 6x9's wont go down to) in your music. But if you arent into bassey music, then the subwoofer will not be doing much more than the 6x9's would anyway. -Well, to a certain extent, depending on how much power your 6x9's are eating....
I have some Hertz ECX 690 6x9" speakers rated at 120wrms each, and they have got excellent bass. The guy in the shop even said I wouldnt need a sub with these, but I am a bass head and I wanted the lower frequencies (and vibrations! :P) So I bought a sub...
If I was you I would buy a sub, maybe just a low power one as you would not need extreme bass with the type of music you like. I just love the vibrations up my back when the music is playing... mmmmmmm :D

Hahaha yeah that's fair enough, I think I'll just invest in some decent speakers and amp for the moment, then put in a sub if I feel the need. I was hoping to spend about $500-$600 on all 4 speakers and an amp... pretty cheap I know, but I am pov :D
I just went outside to try to access the rear speakers, but am having some trouble getting the rear cover on the wagon off. I've pulled out the little circular insert things that hold the cover on, but it won't come off... the handle seems to be in the way, do I need to take that off?
Firstly - you cant blow a speaker by underpowering it (say 60wrms speakers, 40wrms amp) unless you dont know how to tune the amp.
Secondly - I personally, like to have an amp with 50% more power than the speaker, just so the amp doesnt have to work as hard, and tuning is (for me) easier when wanting to push the speakers.
Thirdly, for that price range, concentrate on front speakers and amp only. Look at Jaycar response series for both amp and speakers.

No worries, I'll have to check out Jaycar next week, see what they've got. Or if anyone has some second hand...?
EDIT: just found the group buy for jaycar gear, gonna try to get in on that
